How to downgrade from 9.50?

My 1030 has become extremely unstable of late. It crashes an average of once every half hour (even more frequently on some rides). I have seen a bunch of errors in the debug logs:

  • "stp_sdio_tx_rx - Error type ( 1 ) err( 6E5D8017 )"
  • Error type ( 8 ) err( 8 )"
  • "mtk_stp_btm - Error type ( 0 ) File( ..\\..\\..\\Platform\\Hesper\\hwm_edge_mt6630.c ) Line( 423 )",

I haven't been able to contact tech support by chat or phone so far. Will keep trying.

Meanwhile, I'm wondering if I could downgrade to an older version of firmware (9.10?). I see a bunch of instructions in these forums to back up settings and copy a file named GUPDATE.GCD, but how do I get that file for the older release?

Thank you!

  • Before downgrading I suggest:

-send your problems and log files to Edge Betateam. Even v9.50 is no beta version, they are usually very nice and respondible: [email protected]

-think of a master reset before downgrading.

    -if you will downgrade:
Get the software here:  http://www.gawisp.com/perry/edge/    (at the moment the site is down)
Find instructions for backup files here:  forums.garmin.com/.../1060625
However, if you have such problems, I would not reuse the old fit files, but rather rebuild the device from scratch.

  • good suggestion,  I have just sent my debugging folder to beta team, if they want to have an look

Now I am on 9.34 beta , much much stable than 9.50 version

,here is the link: (but of course you can chose other version)

  • Thank you folks. I was able to connect with Garmin support. I've sent them my files for analysis (not sure if/when they will get back to me). They reluctantly gave me a copy of v9.10, which I installed from scratch (i.e. didn't restore settings.fit or activity profiles).

I'll see how it goes when I ride tomorrow.

Since moving to 9.50 my 1030 is freezing after every ride and won't turn on when a USB cable is plugged in. I have to hold the power button for 15 second to get it to recover. Then it is typically fine until after my next ride. No problem during the ride, only in between rides.

  • OP here. It crashed twice in a two hour ride on 9.10, which suggests a hardware defect. I'm going to try installing OSM map of the area in case the current map is corrupt (I updated it around the same time it started crashing). Otherwise, I am out of ideas.

  • Yes.  Please let us know what you find out.  I have been messing around with this for 2 months now.  My 1030 is pretty much worthless.  It resets and loses profiles and sensors every few days.

  • Just a +1 crashing user here since moving to 9.50 firmware -- have another friend with same situation.  Hard crashes mid-ride and as well I'm experiencing the lock-up when connecting to USB sporadically.  Today on my ride it crashed 3 times.

  • About a month ago I got a refurbished 1030 from Garmin due to the blue halo problem. When I set it up, it updated to 9.50. I had seemingly endless problems with the device crashing twice, having to do soft resets to get it going, losing profiles, heart and power zones not being able to update, unusually high battery usage. I was about to give up and get in touch with Garmin to replace it but after my third total reset it started to work perfectly and has for my last ten rides.

Something is definitely wrong with the 9.50 firmware but I would try a total reset. Hopefully you won't have to perform three resets like I had to do.

  • When my 1030 got unstable I ran the file system check on it, it found minor issues and resolved those. After that things got back to normal. So you should do that to make sure the file system is in good shape. On a Mac use DiskUtility, and run the FirstAid command on the GARMIN drive after you connect the Edge to your Mac. on a PC the is a command line something like "chkdsk -f".  If the file system as any error you can reset all you want you will always have issues. This only take a minute to do.

  • I contacted Garmin UK support via chat today as I have similar issues (random shut down part way through rides losing data) on 9.50.  They want me to send debugging folder and noted that it is similar to "something [they] are currently investigating.....[they will add me] to the investigation".
