Usage of custom maps - problem with freezing?

Dear all

I had an Edge 1000, fine until it crashed but with one problem: when i uploaded custom raster maps (from KOMPASS DVD) and activated it in the Edge in most times the device freezened after some minutes when started a tour.

Is this problem the same with the Edge 1030 (and the similar Edge 1030 Plus)  or no problem?

Thanks  in advance

  • My 1030 works fine with openmtb and opencycle

maps.   Maybe it’s a map not unit issue.

  • You should get the free OSM based maps. They work just fine. You can get all the instructions here https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/08/how-to-install-free-maps-on-your-garmin-edge.html

  • Can confirm that OpenMTBMap is running fine here. But you must make sure that you only have one routable Map set active per Region. e.g. you cannot have two routable maps for germany active at the same time, you have to disable one or the other. Edge gets highly confused if two or even more routable maps are active in the same region.

  •  But the problem is - and we have to accept - is used to Kompss maps. He has been using it for years and would like to use them in the new 1030 plus, especially since the device is compatible according to the Garmin shop page.

  • Yes, my point is: as I use the maps mainly for mountain hiking plus MTB in new regions I prefer raster maps like Alpenverein or KOMPASS as all paths and trails are included there. Topo/vector maps like the OpenMTP map are fine but do not show all official trails in the mountains.

I have installed Open MTB maps since years on baseCamp but nearly never use it.

So, according to mcinner1 reply - either Edge 1030 Plus will be able to be recognized properly in baseCamp and allows the download to BaseCamp and upload to the device of BirdsEye raster maps or there is another possibilty for doing that with other raster maps.

Garmin sells other ratsre maps for Alps - the Alpenvereins Topo v4, but they cost EUR 129,90 and - as the Edge 1030 Plus has no more SD slot - can only be used by this one device - if it is damaged ==> possible problems and need to rebuy).

I have the KOMPASS DVD for Austria at home and it is easy to upload raster maps as custom maps (.klz) to the Edge devices. However when using these with my old Edge 1000 the device freezed/crashed after a couple of minutes when starting an activity ==> seemed to be that these custom maps are not fully compatible to the Edge 1000.

==> I dont know if this is better with the new Edge 1030 Plus - I will have to test intensively - but I dont want to rely on it in the mountains in the next weeks. And I assume the problem will stay so I need either BirdsEye or other raster maps affordable and 100% compatible with the Edge 1030 Plus.

  • just uploaded .kmz files from Kompass DVD to Edge 1030 Plus. What I was wondering: is there a limit of .kmz files to be used by the Edge 1030 Plus?

I uploaded 5 .kmz files, they are shown in folder of device on PC properly but device shows only 4 maps in "activated-userdefined maps" and on the display.

    1. I think I remember correctly that I recognized no such limit on my old Edge 1000.

Would be bad as this is my workaround-solution as long as BirdsEye doesnt work with Edge 1030 Plus

  • solved by Garmin with recent firmware
