Edge 1030 stopped working since update (WILL NOT TURN ON)

My Edge wanted me to do an update before my ride yesterday, and since then it has not turned on, it does not get any further than the screen saying Garmin with the line saying loading courses, workouts at the bottom. After that, it switches off. I have tried multiple times. Prior to this I was using it for a month with no issues from new. I have only been using it outside and it has not been wet at all.

Anyone got any ideas on what I can do? Thanks

  • Maybe a total reset might help:
Press and hold both buttons at bottom (lap and start)
Press On button on left side one time - keep on pressing both bottom buttons
    Wait what happens
I you are lucky your Edge starts from the scratch with chosing language.

Thanks, think I did that. I seem to have lost all my ride history and training stats. Hopefully it will be working okay, not what I expected from the top end device, I've owned many other edges.

  • When the device is hang, hold the power button for 10sec or so, and release it when you ear the first beep. This will force a hard reboot but should not erase the device. That sais there seems to be an issue with 9.5 as many people have similar problems.

  • Yup, and this is very "normal" behaviour....

  • I logged a ticket with Garmin, and they suggested to have the device connect to a PC or Mac, and run a check the storage device:

Check a Garmin Mass Storage Device for Errors

A check disk is run to ensure the integrity of the files on a device. To run a check disk:

    PC:

    1. Connect the device to the computer
    2. Press the Windows key +  E
    3. Locate the Garmin device and see what drive letter Windows assigned to the device
    4. Press the Windows key + R
    5. Type cmd
    6. Click OK
    7. Type chkdsk x: /f (Where 'x' is the drive letter assigned by Windows)

The check disk will now run on the Garmin device

    • Answer Y for Yes if you are prompted to convert orphaned fragments into files
    • Contact Product Support if you receive the message "The type of filesystem is Raw. CHKDSK is not available for RAW drives."

    Mac:

    1. Connect the device to the computer
    2. Click Finder
    3. Click Applications
    4. Double-click the Utilities folder
    5. Double-click Disk Utility
    6. Select the Garmin drive
    7. Click First Aid
    8. Click Repair Disk
      • If the Repair Disk button is inactive, click Verify Disk first

The check disk is complete, and the device should be free from corruption.

Mine came back with no errors, but seems to be behaving now (12 "instance" power ons, without having to hold the button down)

Apparently if this does not fix it, then the unit needs to be returned/replaced.  Apparently the firmware cannot be downgraded (if 9.5 is causing this)

  • Same thing happened to me since the last update this week.  I was able to do a reset and it seems to work now.

    Thank you for the info!

  • I also have this same issue which re-occurs almost every time I power on my device since upgrading to v12.  I opened a case w/ support who suggested I try the beta (12.14), but this didn't help.  My edge gets stuck loading courses and the only way i've found to use it after this is to connect it via usb cable and hold the lap button while powering it on to force it into mass storage mode so that I can delete all the files in the NewFiles folder.  I've also experienced freezes in the middle of a ride which result in this problem.  My case is still open with support; hopefully they get it fixed soon, or let us revert back to 11.x.

  • I had a lot of 0KB .tmp files in the NewFiles folder. Deleting them seems to have solved the long boot time issues for me.

Will keep an eye out on this folder if they are coming back.

  • What if someone does not have Windows nor Mac? :)

  • Do you have any computer?  If not, maybe go to a public library. You don't need to install software to delete a file off the units file system.
