1030 Bluetooth implementation really is garbage

Every other BT device I connect my phone to - headphones, keyboard, car, Edge 1000 - connects instantly and stays connected without problem. With the 1030, when I power it on it usually takes up to ten minutes to establish a connection to the phone - after I start an activity, the two don't usually connect until I've ridden somewhere between two and five kilometres - and I have never managed to get through a ride without seeing multiple instances of "phone disconnected" and then "phone connected" appearing on the 1030 display top line. It make no difference if I start GCM and leave it sitting in the foreground, there is still an extended delay before the connection gets established.

Lest anyone thinks this is indicative of a faulty unit, this is the fourth 1030 I've had, and they all have had the same BT connection problems. Garmin replaced the previous three 1030 units because they all started suffering from the screen delamination / blue halo problem. The problem has also persisted across both the phones I have had since first acquiring a 1030, and across three different versions of Android. Phone is presently a Pixel 4 running Android 10 and GCM 4.31, and 1030 has 9.50 FW, but I've had the problems all the way back to an earlier Pixel 2 phone running Android 8.1 and FW 3.something on the 1030.

It's enabled, and according to my phone LE is connected. But the Garmin still insists it's not connected, even though I get notifications. My understanding is that the regular Bluetooth connection only happens when you complete a ride and the Garmin needs to upload ride data. But that connection does not work at all anymore, as far as I can tell.

  • You are correct notifications and during-ride communication is over low speed low power BTLE. The upload uses higher speed regular BT. Both require the Connect Mobile app to function.

  • This has been my experience as well, or very similar.

My FR 945 connects/syncs with my OnePlus 7 Pro (un-branded, not a carrier device, not that it really matters, but I figure someone might ask..), FLAWLESSLY, I'd say in 1-2 seconds, tops, as did my previous VA3.

My 1030, when I first got it, back in 03/30, was great, it would connect similarly, and consistently.

None of these are set up for constant-update, I prefer to sync my activities when I'm done, say with a 40mi ride, I turn on BT on both devices, fire up the app, and boom-zip, sync is done (typically).

At some point, about a month ago, my 1030 started failing to connect, would require multiple BT enable/disable sequences, on both devices, and then mostly it would sync (typically taking several minutes, occasionally 5+ minutes), a few times I just gave up, and did the sync via USB, at EOW.

I've deleted the 1030 from both sides, the unit itself, and from the Garmin app on the phone, and from BT-settings, on the phone, and re-paired them, but the behavior is the same, it's consistently-inconsistent, now.

Pretty sure something has gotten cached (a BT pairing key), in terms of pairing, and perhaps doing a full factory-reset of the 1030 would resolve it, but I've installed some stuff, customized screens, etc, it's a pretty big pain to do factory-resets, to fix this stuff, IMO.  The 1030 when it works, is great, until it doesn't, then it's a headache.

My 945 still works, flawlessly, EVERY TIME I connect/sync it, across all the 1030 BT issues, hmm...

I bought a 1030 Edge about a month ago just previous the 1030 Edge Plus launch Cry.  I shattered the screen on my Edge 520 Plus and thought I would upgrade Cry. I've tried all the troubleshooting tips from around the web and here about 100 times and cant get the bluetooth pairing to work. I have worked with Garmin support extensively with no resolution my problem.  My phone is a Motorola Edge Plus so its a pretty newish Android phone. Garmin has sent me two devices with the same results. I can get the pairing code on both devices and accept it. I get a progress bar in Connect that indicates the bluetooth pairing is completing. The progress bar makes it to 25% and freezes. After a couple minutes,  I get a message the pairing failed.

I have a Edge 520 Plus that  pairs with my phone flawlessly. I have a Garmin InReach Explorer + that pairs flawlessly.  I have $15 earbuds that pair flawlessly. I have a litany of other bluetooth devices connected to my phone flawless. Samsung smartwatch, bluetooth speakers, printers, car stereo system. Ive tried removing all these devices and have even factory reset my phone and the Garmin Edge 1030 device with same result. I am using the latest version of Connect from the Play store.

Im starting to suspect it is a design flaw or deficiency with Edge 1030. I'm also starting to suspect this why they have suddenly released the Edge 1030 Plus.

I see replies in this thread from Apple users indicating success. Are there any Android users out there without BT problems? Does anybody have Motorola Edge+ that has experienced success?

  • Vast majority of users connect their iPhone with the Edge 1030 so it is not a systematic problem. Motorola Edge well so few of those out there not much to measure against. Always better to bave a more mainstream device when it comes to having the attention to fix the problems. That said make sure you got this.

    1. Delete any Edge related BlueTooth connections you may have, forget them.

    2. Delete the Edge in the Connect Mobile App

    3. Delete the phone in the Edge 1030 connected features page

    4. Initiate pairing from the Connect Mobile App

    5. make sure you establish the TWO required bluetooth connections - the first one is BT and is used for sync, the second one is BLE and is used by the connected features when you ride. The Connect Mobile App will have you make both but it is easy to skip the second thinking you just done it with the first one.

    6. complete the paring wizard until the end.

Most people with issues have only one of the two BlueToooth connection types setup and failed to set them both.

  • I have this exact same problem with my Motorola G7.  It updated to android 10 a few weeks ago. Before the update it was working fine.  I tried reconnecting and get to 25% at which point I get an error that the connection failed.  It's definitely the phone.  I connected my1030 to my wife's iPhone without problems.  I'm hoping Moto comes out with a fix.  My last option is to reset my phone. This would be a hassel and still might not work.

The recent comment about BT and BLE connection is new info.  I see them both from several tries but only the BT connection shows up in the Garmin connect app.  I will try again with the new info in mind.

  • @BourbonBill - sure to remove the Bluetooth connection in your phone's Bluetooth properties prior to re-pairing the 1030.  If makes you feel any better, iPhone connectivity complaints are way up as well lately, more than the Android complaints.  So it's not limited to Android devices after 9.x upgrades.. Currently after un-pairing/re-pairing during one of the 9.50 pre-release beta's my phone connection to my Note10+ has been rock SOLID.  (knock on wood.  yeah, I probably just jinxed it.).  Still having troubles with other sensors dropping out, but the phone connection has been great lately.

I tried resetting my phone and it didnt work, FYI. So you think its a problem with Motorola bluetooth and Android 10?  I do have a Garmin Inreach Explorer + and Edge 520 Plus that both pair with my Motorola Edge+ phone without issue. It leads me to believe it's the 1030 Edge device that is the problem. Maybe some day with we know the answer. Anyway, it's informative to hear from another Motorola user.Thumbsup

  • I was able to get it to connect on an iPhone.  And was able create a new connection with my Moto android the day before I updated the phone to android 10.  I'm starting to think its the way the phone and connect app work together to make the connection.  Either way, it sounds like resetting the phone doesn't work. So now.  I did some research on the Moto and found some BT connection problems recently.  Looks like I'm in for a long wait for a Connect app or phone update.
