1030 Bluetooth implementation really is garbage

Every other BT device I connect my phone to - headphones, keyboard, car, Edge 1000 - connects instantly and stays connected without problem. With the 1030, when I power it on it usually takes up to ten minutes to establish a connection to the phone - after I start an activity, the two don't usually connect until I've ridden somewhere between two and five kilometres - and I have never managed to get through a ride without seeing multiple instances of "phone disconnected" and then "phone connected" appearing on the 1030 display top line. It make no difference if I start GCM and leave it sitting in the foreground, there is still an extended delay before the connection gets established.

Lest anyone thinks this is indicative of a faulty unit, this is the fourth 1030 I've had, and they all have had the same BT connection problems. Garmin replaced the previous three 1030 units because they all started suffering from the screen delamination / blue halo problem. The problem has also persisted across both the phones I have had since first acquiring a 1030, and across three different versions of Android. Phone is presently a Pixel 4 running Android 10 and GCM 4.31, and 1030 has 9.50 FW, but I've had the problems all the way back to an earlier Pixel 2 phone running Android 8.1 and FW 3.something on the 1030.

  • With a logical hat on I would suggest that there is nothing wrong with the BT implementation and more likely to be the environment it’s running in.

given you have had 4 units under various firmwares if there was a BT issue the whole 1030 user base would be jumping up and down it would point to the phones being the issue

a BT connection is a pairing between 2 devices if one side drops the link it will break so it might be your phone that’s the issue for whatever reason

i have had a 1000 for many years and just recently moved to a 1030 after a few rides it was fine so I moved a few of my favourite connect IQ apps and widgets to the 1030 and during a ride I kept getting dropouts so I removed the IQ items on my return home and all has been well since that was with an iPhone 8 Plus

my deductions from that being either a rogue IQ item or the IQ subsystem I am not going to name the apps as it might be a false accusation pointing finger I could spend some time adding and removing apps to try and isolate which one if any caused the issue

so question being is your 1030 in an out of the box state with no IQ APPS installed and only changes being custom screens

  • There's nothing wrong with BT on the 1030. When I power on my 1030, it finds my iPhone 8 in seconds. Livetrack works fine and the two never gets disconnected. It is however very important you perform the correct pairing procedure. Maybe you should remove all current connections, remove the devices from eachother settings and pair them again. It might also be a BT thin on your Android.

  • Android Bluetooth has always been very hit and miss from experience, especially at lower battery charge levels.

  • I also don't think the problem is with the Bluetooth on the Garmin. I have had no problems pairing and keeping the the connection with my Iphone. I've read that the Pixel phones do have a pairing problem with Garmin products.

  • Most people don't have those issues so it is something specific to your setup, not the 1030 at large. My iPhone never had problems connecting to the Edge. Do you make sure the Garmin Connect Mobile app is always running on the phone AND it has permission to run in the background as well ? This is mandatory because this app act as a conduit between the Edge and the internet/servers. Android being a very open platform and quite easy to mess-up, it could be one of those security apps, virus scanner and other such app that mess up things as well. But as others have said, the BT implementation in the Edge might not be perfect but it certainly works for the most part and your issues are not common ones.

Yep. It's ridiculous. My 1030 worked fine (after fighting with it for weeks) until iOS 13.5.1 came out. Now the LE connection works but not the regular connection. It seems like the only way to get a ride to upload is via a manual WiFi upload. And I know it's not just me, and not just a few owners, because I see constant complaints among 1030 owners. Those of you who don't have difficulties, consider yourselves lucky.

  • Have you deleted and pairing (both the two BT in setting, and the one device in Connect Mobile (so 3 things to delete) , and redone the paring process completely ? Also Garmin as an app note with explaining all the iOS settings to set correctly if you want to get notifications and the likes.

I've done it many times before. Usually it works for a while, and then a few months later I'm back where I started. Since the LE connection works (I get text and phone notifications), and I can upload data via WiFi, I need to decide if the irritation factor is high enough to once again re-pair to my phone.

I have about ten other devices that pair to my iPhone via Bluetooth. I've never had to fuss with the pairing of any of the other ones, ever.

  • I noted today that having recently since last ride updated both iPhone to 13.5.1 and garmin to 9.50 I didn’t get any notifications upon investigation I found Bluetooth was disabled on the garmin following 9.50 update

  • It did that to me too. I just re-enabled and it was fine.
