Edge 1030 stuck at FW 3.70 can't update to latest FW

Took the chance on a used 1030 that needed a new screen. Screen replacement went fine, but the unit is stuck on FW 3.7. Garmin Express downloads the newest firmware ok, but there is no prompt after disconnecting unit from PC to update firmware.

Also tried connecting via WiFi to download firmware and after multiple attempts it finally grabbed the latest firmware, but the unit freezes on the "Garmin" screen and needs to be reset (holding power button for 30 seconds).

I've tried downloading other older firmware versions with no luck. Many master resets etc. have brought no love.

I have a well functioning edge 1030 and I was wondering, can I copy files from that to get this one working?

Also, it's not showing maps. I've downloaded Open Street Maps and they don't show up on the device. I've tried both internal hard drive and external. Assuming this might because the firmware is outdated?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

  • I once had the same problem that I was not able to update my Edge 1030. Although the update gcd file was on the device - no prompt to update.
It turned out that the gcd file was corrupt because the filesystem on my Edge got corrupt. I run CHKDSK on the device and there were several „lost chains“ and corrupted file allocations found. After fix with CHKDSK /f I copied the gcd file anew to the device, run a binary file comparison  and after all was ok the update went well.

If there is no problem with the filesystem - check which software version Garmin Express says your Edge has. Is it the correct version?

To copy some files from one Edge to the other to get it updated will not work!
But if your device once has updated to the same version as the other, you can copy files from one to the other to get the same setup on both. See here:

  • Thanks for the reply. For CHKDSK, is that done through DOS? How do I run CHKDSK on the device? Thanks!

  • CHKDSK is a program you can run on WIN PCs (yes, it‘s an old program from DOS times).

Connect your Edge to the PC - do not change to the device‘s drive. Let‘s assume, your device shows up as G:

When the device was successfully mounted click left bottom to the WIN sign. A command line window opens. Type in:

    CHKDSK G: /f   <Enter>

A DOS window opens and shows the result of its work. If a question comes up to store lost chaines or to do something else - say yes. CHKDSK cannot harm your device.

  • Thanks, ran the CHKDSK and the PC didn't find any issues with any of the files on the unit. I tried running another update through Garmin Express and after removing the unit, it asked me if I wanted to install the update...I sad Yes and then ethe unit froze on the "Garmin" screen again and I needed to do a reset, where it's back to the old 3.7 software, no maps and says there is no software update. Frustrating.

  • I just checked here http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/  what versions the Edge 1030 got. As far as I can see there never was a version 3.70. I only can find 3.60 and then 3.80.
Anyway... Although I think thus will not help in your case - try following:
download version 3.80 from above site - donˋt worry - this is a safe site.
Maybe the jump from 3.xx to 9.xx is too wide (I don‘t believe that...)

    Edit:
I just checked on my PC, where I have stored all firmware-files I ever had on my Edge. Yes - there was a firmware 3.70!

  • Really appreciate your help. Thanks for the link....it rings a bell. I think I used the link once for a Garmin 510 I had that needed new firmware. I'll keep you posted.

  • Your 1030 may be one of the ones sold in places like Singapore and those units have different firmware.

  • An APAC device - that could be the reason!

To see more setup info do following:
    Turn off your Edge completely.
Press and keep pressing the start button (right bottom), tip on ON button - keep pressing start button.

A setup screen appears - maybe with more information.

To end this screen press and hold ON button for 20 sec.

    EDIT:
Thinking about APAC...  which languages are possible on that device?

  • Can you post a FIT activity file from the unit. That will contain the model number.

  • Interesting point about the APAC possibilities. When I get back to the unit I'll do some sleuthing and see what I can find. But, you would think when trying to update a APAC model it would automatically send you to the APAC firmware download page?
