Fw 9.50 Free Ride indoor trainer mode doesn't work for me - Worse w/Fw 10

I was very much looking forward to the new functionality introduced with fw 9.50 'Added a Free Ride indoor trainer mode that enables the trainer to be set to a target grade' but...., it doesn't work for me

Issue is persistence, so when you set a target grade, let's say 4%, it works pretty well and the trainer simulates that,... but for 30 seconds only, then it reverts to 0%.. and this happens no matter how many times you try on any target % you may use

This is not 100% new, I've always experienced 'after 30 sec' 1-2 secs disengagement events or 'gaps' when you change your target watts, so you are in 200w and move to 210w and after 30 sec you get a 1 sec event with no power and back to the target power (210w), so it was just a small annoyance,... but the free ride is unusable, as it disengages after 30sec (back to 0%) and it doesn't come back

My trainer is a Tacx Neo (with the tacx ios app the slope functionality works like a charm and on erg mode I don't get the 30 sec events)

Any ideas?

  • Just to be sure, could it be that another app (from PC, smartphone, etc.) is also linked to the Neo, overriding the resistance targets?

  • good question, no, nothing, just the Edge 1030 connected

  • There are many issues with the ERG Trainer control features between the Edge & Tacx Neo (I have the Neo 2T).

These include periodic dropouts of Power & Cadence (Which I have a support open support case). There is also an issue with things like Free Ride, Set Target Power, Set Resistance where the power keeps getting reset to zero., which I have reported but again nothing is being done about it.

I've had this happen with certain workouts, which don't have power targets where on a workout step change or pressing the lap key the power/resistance gets reset to zero from the preset value. It would no doubt do the same if there was some sort auto lap configured for the activity

I am experiencing the very same issue with the identical setup (Edge 1030 + Tacx Neo 1): The gradient dropping to 0% after exactly 30s after setting a value. The edge still displays the previously set gradient. Changing it back and forth enables another 30s, but, as said, this is absolutely unusable for a decent workout. I am also very positive about this feature as such, so I am hoping for a timely fix.

  • Thanks. Good to see this is not related to my own devices and clearly linked to the edge software

Hopefully Garmin picks this up soon

  • Hey Garmin team, an update on this....

We've gone from bad to worse after the Fw10 update, the 30 seconds issue is now on ERG mode as well

    before we had 2 issues

    1)  I've always experienced 'after 30 sec' 1-2 secs disengagement events or 'gaps' when you change your target watts, so you are in 200w and move to 210w and after 30 sec you get a 1 sec event with no power and back to the target power (210w), so it was just a small annoyance

    2) On Free ride mode, Issue is persistence, so when you set a target grade, let's say 4%, it works pretty well and the trainer simulates that,... but for 30 seconds only, then it reverts to 0%.. and this happens no matter how many times you try on any target % you may use

Now a 3rd one is introduced, linked to the first one... so you are running on erg mode, and you get the every 30 sec disengagement events or 'gaps' .... all the time and without any target change...., so one word, now the functionality is useless and I have to use a 3rd party app on the phone for my indoor rides.

My trainer is still Tacx Neo
