Ant+ pairing

OK, I confess I don’t understand ant+........

I want to pair 2 Giant ebikes, both with ridecontrol1 ant+, to one Edge 1030, under seperate profiles.

My primary bike is all paired up, works well.

I set a new profile for the next bike and tried to add its sensors using the ebike sensor option and got ”connecting”  on the display until my patience ran out. I could pair that bike to an Edge 310 and was a bit surprised the sensor id numbers were the same for the 2 bikes. Thought maybe the computer thinks its the same sensor,so doesn’t pair it again. Given that, I thought I might be able to see the data from the secondary bike if I use the tried and tested profile for the first bike. Nope.

So, should I be able to pair both ebikes to the same 1030?

  • First you have to realize that pairing ANT+ sensors has nothing to do with profiles. Since Edge 1000 Garmin uses a so called „sensor pool“.
Meaning: all known sensors are stored in one pool and the „waked up“ sensors will connect automatically.

And now to your ebike problem: although I never tested it, it might be possible that only one ebike can be connected as „ebike sensor“. Just like Garmin remote sensor - only one is possible.

    What I would do:
Delete the „ebike sensor“ and pair both ebikes only as power and speed/cadence sensor. That should be possible for each bike.
Download Jan Capeks Garmin IQ datafield „ebike“ and try out if it works with your Giant bikes.  (ebike battery and support kevel)

(If Giant sends the same ID for all bikes, then there is no way to pair more than one bike.)

Terrific answer, thank you. I’ll give it a try later today.

How does the Edge decide whether it will use the speed & distance data from the gps or the Ant+ sensors? I haven’t  come across anything that suggests I can choose. I suspect my current setup uses the Ant+. I say that because I am using a Garmin Instinct to broadcast wrist hrm to the 1030. It will only broadcast when an activity is current and it Also then records the speed and distance. When I compare the 2 data sets from the same ride, the Edge is close to 10% more generous then the Instinct. I believe the Instinct is correct.
    Thank you for your time
