Garmin Edge 1030 - Navigating to a Location While Riding

I have a new Edge 1030 (Bontrager Version, BTW) and my experience base is a Edge 800.

I have not been able to figure out how to start navigating to a saved location (or getting into navigation at all) in the middle of a ride. A typical use-case would be you get lost on a ride and just want to navigate 'Home', but don't want to start a new ride. On the Edge 800 I would simply tap the screen, hit Menu, and then the 'Where To' option. What is the equivalent on the 1030?

Second question - what is that 'hand thing' that shows up on the navigation screen (sometimes)? Other than tap it to make it get dark, I cannot figure out what it does.

Thanks.

dave

ps. FWIW, for an old guy with old eyes the 1030 screen is a really big step up in terms of 'visibility at a glance' vs. the 800.

  • 1) Navigation and recording of an activity are completely independent from each other. You can - without interrupting the recording - load a new route, end a navigation, enter a destination - whatever!
Go to the homescreen, press Navigation and do whatever you want. The recording will not be interrupted.
    2) Tap your hand on the map screen - then you can move the map. Back then again with the arrow down left.

  • Thanks for the response. I think I am making progress here. The logic of the system seems to be

    1) A single tap on any screen (e.g., Data Screen) gives you a 'home' option. But for the MAP screen it takes two taps (which is how I missed it).

    2) A single tap on the map screen gives you 'a hand'. But I cannot move a map under any circumstances - hand, no hand, gray hand (after tapping the hand). I don't recall having that problem when browsing a map, so maybe this is simply a limitation of how things work during a RIDE.

    3) "Back then again with the arrow down left" - Sorry, I just can't parse that one, but it may contain information that I need. If I could figure out how to move a screen, I am guessing that this is how you get back to where the screen started. But for me a single tap on the map screen does not seem to do anything but bring up a hand (or serve as the first of a double tap to get a home option). Late edit - it also brings up a "+/-" (zoom in/out) which does work.

    Thanks again.

  • The hand and +- sign should react to touch.
Tap on the hand changes its shape - it becomes a circle with a square around it and the "arrow back" appears at the bottom left. Now you can move the map. Tap on + and - enables zoom-in, zoom-out.
If your screen in the upper area is really inresponsive, then something is wrong with your device!

  • Thanks again. That works exactly as you described. AFAIK, it did not work like that for me yesterday, but maybe there was something about the timing or mode I was in or something else that messed it up,. Regardless, thank you for your help;. dave
