Stopped using Edge Touring

Just charged the Edge up after not bothering because its navigation is close on useless and all I really do is follow GPX. Once again updates fail because it can't handle laptop going to sleep and then it wants 2 hrs to update, found out screen has lines in it. Poor product even worse software. Strava on my phone from now on it just works so much nicer.

  • How about setting your laptop to not go to sleep? Map updates do take a long time if you have slow internet service.

  • Map updates take a ridiculous amount of time irrespective of whether or not the laptop is set to stay on - define a "slow internet service"; mine is a 40Mb broadband connection and the last Edge Touring map update took 2-3 hours. On top of that, Garmin Express continues to inform me with mind-numbing repetitiveness that there are new map updates (no, there are not - it's running the latest 2020 version that GE took 2-3 hours to install which it keeps reminding me to load)

  • Mine malfunctioned in a number of ways following the usual "slower the paint drying" map update. Whilst you will lose any of your own data, courses, etc., I used the reset method of simultaneously holding down the "lap" and "start" buttons whilst powering on the device - think you wait until the Garmin splash display appears then release the two buttons. Thereafter for me the unit's full functionality returned although no stored personal info, rides, courses, etc. as these are totally wiped.

I also use Strava but very occasionally the iPhone app annoyingly decides to stop recording - sometimes it's a section mid-ride, sometimes it drops only the first few miles.

Not really used the Edge to navigate as such - mainly used it to follow set courses I've prepared using OS mapping as my reference then either Strava or Garmin Connect to create the GPX file for upload.

  • I suspect that the slow speed is intentional.

Maybe, it's done so it doesn't stall internet use for people with slow internet access.

  • Map updates are few & far between ... and, yes, they take a long time because there is a lot of data.

As said, find a utility that will prevent your computer from going to sleep.  On my Mac, I use a free tool called Amphetamine. There are similar utilities for Windows available.
