Bluetooth Connection Edge 1030

Do I need to have the Garmin Connect App open on my IPhone X (iOS version 13.4.1) for my Edge 1030 to connect to my phone? When the app is not open on my iPhone, my 1030 shows “searching”, even though my iPhone shows connected in the Bluetooth list of devices. However, a soon as I open the app on my iPhone, my 1030 connects immediately.

I get a message that Livetrack cannot access my location when I start a ride and don’t have the connect app open on my iPhone; I disregard the message and there are no issues during my ride.

There are also no issues syncing after an activity, (even when I don’t have the Connect App open on my phone while doing the activity). Perhaps that is achieved through the wifi connection, not the app on my iPhone..

i have the same issue on mine, it only connects when the application is open even when the Bluetooth list on my iPhone writes that the device is connect.

  • It has always been the case that you need the mobile app to be loaded/launched on the phone for the connection to work. It does not have to be in the foreground, but it must at least run in the background and be authorized to do so. The reason is simple, the app acts as a conduit between the Edge and the Garmin servers. It performs necessary functions for this communication to happen. So if you don't load the app that communication is not working. So just leave the app running in the background on your phone and you will be fine.
