Edge1030 - removing Garmin CycleMap Europe

Hi together !

I want to remove the Garmin CycleMap Europe from my Edge1030 because I never use them and always when connecting the 1030 to Garmin BaseCamp (by USB) it will transfer the map into it and it takes so long ... :-(

Does anyone of you know, which files have to be removed for CycleMap Europe North East & South East ?

It seems, that it must be more than one file ?

Thank you

Alfonso

  • Hello Alfonso,

connect yr device to PC and have a look into your  D:\Garmin

    you will find gmapprom.img ( about 3,1GB  = North East ) and D601xxA0.img ( about 2,8 GB = South West )

just rename both fileextentions to *.i_mg;     renaming extention back to revert, if neaded.

Keep in mind by renaming files to *i_mg  you are losing map visibilty at your Edge as well!!!

Edge and Basecamp both refer to *.img files showing maps.

    • INTL Standard Basemap: gmapbmap, gmapbmap.sum

    • Garmin Cycle Map EU South West: D6017xxxx.img, D6017xxx.gma, D6017xxx.unl

    • Garmin Cycle Map EU North East: gmapprom.img, gmapprom.sum, gmapprom.unl, gmapprom.gma

    • Garmin Geocode Map Map EU: gmapgc.img, gmapgc.sum, gmapgc.unl
    • Garmin DEM Map Map EU: gmapdem.img, gmapdem.sum, gmapdem.unl
    • Timezone: gmaptz.img, gmaptz.sum
  • Why would you do that ? If you have the map properly installed it will not put it back every time. Just leave it there. There is no point removing it. As for the other .img files removing them may break a lot of the device functionality.

Again when the map is installed and up to date the software will not transfer it every time. If it does there is something not normal with your setup. The map is updated about once a year, so that is how often a transfer should occur.

  • Good evening offenbacher54

thank you for your perfect answer - I tried it and it works exactly in the way I looked for :-)

    Have a good time

  • Good evening Martin868

I using the swiss topo pro on the edge and also within basecamp. Outside switzerland I use a separate sd card with OSM.

When I want to create / plan some new tracks it always reads first the Garmin Cycle Maps from the edge and that takes always a few minutes before it loads me wanted map from the sd card.

If there will be a setting somewhere in Basecamp, that makes not reading the Garmin Cycle Maps from the Edge - that would be the best solution ( on the edge itself, I've de-activated the Cycle Maps).

Thank you anyway and have a good time :-)

  • Hello a.maddaloni,

did you install your OSM maps on your PC as well?

I use Garmin Cycle Maps and OSM Maps, OSM like you on SD-card. Map type is choosen depending on profile settings.

All OSM maps are installed on my PC too.

Tour/tracks are usually planned within Basecamp, therefor I've cloned my Edge device to USB-stick so I can refer to Garmin Cycle Maps if needed.

Sending planned route/tracks to device causes no delay.

  • Same for me. I always use MapManager to install the map from downloaded file to my Mac. Then I use MapInstall to install the map from the Mac to the Edge device. I never copy file manually. MapManager and MapInstall can be download from Garmin. Once you install the map on the computer it is there for use in BaseCamp even when the Edge is not connected.

  • Hi offenbacher54

I'm using the OSM from Freizeit-Karten.de and the swisstopo pro (both on different sd cards). The OSM also installed within BaseCamp.

I only wanted to remove the Garmin CycleMap's from my Edge1030 - because I'll never use them. But always when connecting my Edge over USB to BaseCamp, the Garmin CycleMap will be transfered for visiblity within BaseCamp. And that takes long time and not needed at the end ...

Thank you - have a good time.

  • Thank you Martin 868 - I do not want to use new other mapmanagers - it works in general really good, only the thing with the not needed GarminCycleMaps was really tedious ...

    Have a good time
