Should I buy a new Edge 1030?

Hello all

I currently have the Edge 1000, and have been very happy with it over the six years of ownership.

The battery is starting to fail on it, and I have two options.

Do a DIY battery replacement and hope that it is a decent quality battery supplied.

OR

Buy a new 1030 device.

Is the device now mature enough to be considered a decent product, or is it still suffering from the usual Garmin bugs?

Thanks

James

  • It looks like the bugs have mostly been shaken out of the 1030.

It looks like the 1030 is a significant upgrade over the 1000 (it has much better battery life). Though, not a huge upgrade.

Not sure how much the battery for the 1000 would cost but I like to see things get fixed.

Thanks. The new batteries are around £15. You can send them away to get done at a few third parties for around £30, which seems reasonable value, but there are of course secure postage costs on top of this. TBH, my Edge 1000 is still ok, bar the battery life, so it is currently the favoured option to retain it.

  • I don't like the Garmin 1030. I love it. Better than my 800 in every way, immense battery life, screen space to run IQ fields.

I wouldn't wait on for a new model. Getting a v1.00 firmware model Garmin is never a good idea.

Thanks, good sound advice. But there is something in the pain of being a glorified beta tester for Garmin. I have been burnt many times ;-)

  • Since Garmin has dropped the price significantly, this might indicate a new model coming out. But, then there is the beta testing issue again.

I'm very pleased with the 1030. It's been very reliable.
