Installing map 2020.10 causes bad navigation. Seems to navigate on autoroutes.

I installed the map Europe 2020.10 by Garmin express software. After this map update the navigation is not correct. This is what I noticed so far: Calculated routes goes on auto highways. Calculated route to home shows very a long route (must be 30 km, but the calculated route shows loops and calculate a route of 127 km). Profile in Edge 1030 is set on cycling. I also have reinstalled the map but unfortunately there’s no improvement. I deselect old maps, so only the 2020 maps are active. This also gives no improvement. Any other suggestions?

  • Try to check/activate "Onverharde wegen"

  • Hi,yes  I tried yesterday. Same route calculation, direct to a high way. I also make a new profile and it generates the same results, also highway. I am looking for uninstalling this 2020.10 map and try to find the previous map version. Just to see if the issue is caused by the new map or caused by the (software) device.

  • I've had the same problem with a past update for the Western Europe Map. In my case it was a problem with the Map itself that made it useless for my specific location. I've tried everything. The only thing that finally solved my problem was a a newer version of the map. However, I've had to wait several months for that. In the mean time, I had to use an open source map for navigating. Really frustrating that Garmin seems to still have issues with every map update.

  • I am afraid you are right.. In that case I’ll try to find how to install the previous version. Or, as you wrote as a solution, try an open source map. And, of course, I try to get in contact with Garmin support.

  • Update: still waiting for a responds from Garmin

To solve the problem I installed an open map (openfietsmap in my case) on a micro SDHC 32 GB, speed 98mb/s. After installing the sd card with the open map file and without changing any parameter on the garmin the problem with the navigation disappeared.

For those who experience the same problem, I would recommend to do the same.

I have a similar issue (with an 820) and strange navigatiion. Already figured out what goes wrong for me. But this seems different for you as I just do not have deatils on my maps and yours does have but goes on highways. However, maybe related.

For me it seems that the 2020.10 update only installs the maps from "North East" Europe and not anything in "South West" Europe. When I navigate in for example berlin it works correct (as the maps are detailed there). In any city in west europe (like amsterdam) there is no detail available so it will use the "base map"which only has highways so it cannot function properly.

Installing an Open Street Map solves it but this should be fixed by Garmin ASAP as this should function properly with their devices. I have a ticket open with them. Will keep you posted.

  • Having had to have my 1030 replaced due to the halo issue, I struggled to even get the unit to boot after installing 2020.10.  If I removed the map, it would boot, but on every re-install of the map....it would just hang at "Loading maps....".

Anyhow...having got past that, I see the following having re-re-re-installed 2020.10:

Garmin Cycle Map EU North East, 2020.10

Garmin Cycle Map EU South West, 2020.10

    Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20

    Garmin Geocode Map EU 2020.20

Does you have all of those enabled as things all seem normal, with nav and routing for me?

I have also re installed the maps multiple times (also with removing them manually from the device) It installs all of the ones you mention excpet that it does not install the south west map. it only installs the north east one (which is useless as I only ride the west part of europe :(

OK, I seem to have finally found why it does not install the South West map and therefor has super strange navigation.

Somehow the garmin express software on my mac did not auto update anymore. I deleted it and reinstalled version 7.0 (from 6.16). In the release notes since my older version found:

"If a map update included multiple map images, Express would only install one of the images, rather than both. Both maps are now being installed correctly."

As I was somehow stuck at 6.16 it only installed one of the maps. After the update to 7.0 I reinstalled the maps again and I checked and now both are installed on my device Slight smile

Tested the navigation this afternoon to see that it worked while riding :) so all good now
