You must make sure the map is enabled in the settings and most likely disable the "Garmin Cycle Map" because two maps covering the same area will conflict. As one suggested check the DC Rainmaker post.

Nothing i do seems to be working.

Do you need to extract files before copying to Garmin?

Maps on the Edge 1030 are under profiles and navigation and it does't appear there to enable

The map needs to be in \Garmin. 

It needs to be *.img

That is, the first part of the name doesn’t matter. The second part needs to be img

that's right. you extract the file (it is quite heavy 1-2GB) and play it in the Garmin directory of the Edge 1030's internal memory. If necessary, you go to GPS under Navigation> Maps and activate the map you just installed.

In my case I use 3 maps that are activated at the same time and that overlap, showing on the screen a single merged image. a base map of Brazil with POIs, a routable topographic OSM map and BirdsEye images of selected locations. It never broke down. And for a while I used custom maps based on geo-referenced images from Google Earth. But the Garmin basemap is disabled.

I had a file named gmappsupp.img on the unit and i moved it to the "garmin folder and now the map appears in navigation and can be enabled.

the name seems to be different though-Openfietsmap lite
