Problem loading strava routes

I have a problem loading strava routes on my edge 1030.It reports a bluetooth error when I try accessing the strava routes app on my unit.

Normally when I have a bluetooth issue I can reopen either the app or turn off/on the edge and try again. This time neither that nor trying to unpair and repair helps. I've tried updating what can be updated, but haven't come across any updates.

I've tried everything I can think of several times.

19 out of 20 times when I try I get the Bluetooth error code: -402. I have also seen two other errors. All has happened today..

I am going to France with my bike in 6 days where I plan to ride around the mountains, so I would love if someone could help me make it work.

  • It may be a BT issue between you edge & GCM on your phone. Does GCM show your edge as paired & connected?

Also. Do you have a WiFi connection Enabled? If so try turning it off & trying to access the Strava routes app again. Some Apps  don't like WiFi being turned on when they're trying to talk over BT

Yes, it shows up as paired and connected.

I've tried with wifi switched on and off.

I've just updated the edge via a map update that didn't show up earlier today. Now I have access to the first four routes from strava, but when i press "more" I get the same bluetooth error again...

Furthermore - the route I want to load - that I have duplicated to make it appear on page one - makes the device stall and I have to restart it afterwards...

  • There could be a problem between the Strava App & GCM. I have had issues in the past where changes to GCM have caused problems with Apps that download courses over BT. It might be worth contacting the developers of the Strava App through the IQ store though from past experience I don't find them very engaging

I don't use the Strava Routes App or Strava Routes. I use the GRouteLoader app, which is much more flexible & although you can't download from Strava; if your courses can be imported into RideWithGPS or Garmin Connect you can download using that app via their route number & with RideWithGPS you can also download pinned routes from a list in a similar way to as they downloaded via Strava Routes. If you are connected to WiFi it will bypass GCM/Phone altogether and automatically download via the course URL. So that might be an option for you. RideWithGPS also has an IQ app of their own too, which works well

On Android GRouteLoader also has the ability to download courses stored locally on your as FIT/GPX files via the GExporter Android app

Regarding the course that makes your device stall. Does the course name have any characters in the name other than numbers/letters?

I have lots of gpx-files on my edge. I have opted for the Strava routes because I use the live segments feature that doesn’t work with preplanned routes if they are not loaded through Strava.

the particular route had an apostrophe in it. Tried taking that out, but it didn’t resolve anything, unfortunately.

  • I think there are limitations to the number of routes you can access. The Strava app only shows the starred routes if I am not mistaken. So reduce the number of starred routes to the minimum, ideally just a few, and do a test. If that works well that would indicate you had too many. It would be one of those poorly documented limitations. I would try that anyway.

  • Also the Edge has a limitation of 200 courses not more. So make sure you are not exceeding that. This includes all files in the \Garmin\Courses folder.

It normally shows both starred and non-started routes. Just tried deleting 5-7 routes bringing my total down to 30 - now I’m back to the edge not showing any routes at all, but giving the Bluetooth error right away.

Only 59 routes stored on the Garmin...

same connectivity issue (error 402) got me to this page. Followed Martin’s advice there and reduced stared routes from 63 to 31. Sync worked after that like a breeze. Thank you all!
