Automatically generated course points

After upgrading to 9.00 or 9.10 Edge 1030 started to automatically generate course points for almost every turn - any idea how can I get rif off that?

I usually plan my route in GConnect, add couple extra course points like climbs, summits, pubs etc and I sync it with Edge. While riding I do not use navigation, I just follow my magenta line + Garmin beeps when I reach my course points. However, with coursepoints for almost every turn I had to turn it off, it keeps beeping like crazy, esp. in cities. I believe it's Garmin: if I convert my course fit to tcx, it only shows my course points, not any automatically generated ones.

Any idea what settings should I change?

Hi, sorry was replying to aweatherall on that point.

  • They impose these worthless course points and in addition they cannot be deleted or edited.
At least they didn't destroy my older courses.
A typical Garmin upgrade that is harming instead of improving.
Of course, users have to test everything for them.

If you use the send to device feature from the course in Garmin Connect then it does know what device the file is being generated for and should apply the logic I described earlier.

If you just send it to your file system then it does not know what the target device is.

I’m afraid that fits neither with my experience of the device iro my previous issue - I have a routable device but Course points were there but appeared only if TBT was switched off, the explanation provided by Garmin for that nor the fact that this issue occurred for everyone after a software update on the device.

We can agree to disagree on the cause, I’m sure we’ll both be happy when it’s fixed.

I use Connect on iPhone to send the courses. It may be that cable to PC provides extra functionality? There is/was definitely on device suppression however as otherwise I would not have had the issue I had in turning off TBT on the device and suddenly seeing course points.

  • The 1030 supports showing both course points and TBT.

The 820 supports one or the other, unless the course points are non turn instructions then you can get both.

As you are posting in the 1030 forum I'm assuming you using a 1030.

I rode with a course today and was able to show TBT and course points, just course points and just TBT instructions.

I’m posting here because I have the issue the primal poster has and added that I was having the same issue on my 530. This post came up when I searched for a solution. I simply pointed out that the issue can be solved by using RWGPS.

It isn’t a matter of whether we can see course points or not. I am aware of the settings which are identical on the 530.

I think we are diverting from the original problem now and avrguing theories on cause which is pointless and on the nature of my previous issue which I mentioned only as evidence to support my view on the cause of this issue.

To be clear though the following were steps I sent in to Garmin on the orevious issue:

    1. create course in GC with custom CP

    2. on device follow course with TBT, only CP displayed are custom which is correct

    3. turn off TBT as now I know the route

    4. follow route again and CP are now displayed at every turn

If course points are turned off I get nothing (no custom points either)

Response from Garmin was that the course points are generated to support course point navigation for devices without routing but turning on TBT on the device hides them. Thus I was stuck with one or the other.

I asked why the auto course points couldn’t be turned off at source ie GC and they told me it was done on device as GC is not that smart.

My point being that asxsuppression, according to this evidence and Gatmin themselves, is on device it makes sense we are seeing the current problem (auto generated CP always displayed) after a software change on the device.

  • I think the problem is not the edge devices update but the garmin connect update.

Every course I send now to 1030 from garmin connect is corrupted with useless automatically generated course points.

All the courses that I have in the 1030 memory (from a few months ago) are displayed correctly only with custom course points.

Using data fields as distance to next (and other similar) does not make any sense now.

Option to disable these dozens of automatically generated points is necessary.

  • not sure if it's GC. Export a course from GC to fit, convert it to tcx in external tool - and in only contains custom course points. If you copy the same fit to Edge it shows all useless automatically generated course points.

    At any rate - it's a bug...

I’ll stand corrected then and apologies to all. I can only assume that the information given me by Garmin was incorrect, perhaps back then it was correct...when this is fixed I’ll try turning TBT off again and see if I get different results.

@aweatherall you know your stuff, I hope you see where I was coming from based on information I was given by Garmin and the now confusing results of my own testing. I can only assume they changed things between then and now...

Still, cause aside, you can still get round this by using RWGPS in the interim as I originally posted. I know importing gpx and such is premium but plotting a course is still free I believe.
