Automatically generated course points

After upgrading to 9.00 or 9.10 Edge 1030 started to automatically generate course points for almost every turn - any idea how can I get rif off that?

I usually plan my route in GConnect, add couple extra course points like climbs, summits, pubs etc and I sync it with Edge. While riding I do not use navigation, I just follow my magenta line + Garmin beeps when I reach my course points. However, with coursepoints for almost every turn I had to turn it off, it keeps beeping like crazy, esp. in cities. I believe it's Garmin: if I convert my course fit to tcx, it only shows my course points, not any automatically generated ones.

Any idea what settings should I change?

  • it is a new setting you can turn off into every single course settings (scroll down)

  • That is not exact. The setting you refer to has always been there. It was toggling the display of the user preset course points (those you add manually on Garmin Connect, the little flag icons for various types of points - generic, water, food, peak, valley, climbs). When you turn this on you were getting those flags on the map as well as an added points list page to your pages rotation. I have been using this for years.

With 9.00 or 9.10 Garmin added to the user created course points all the turns. So now you get BOTH sets of course points in the same list along with alerts. You won't notice the user created ones if you don't add any to your courses but that's how it works. The setting does not only affect the turn points

I also do not like what they have done. But if I turn off the course points, I also loose those I created myself and that I don t want. To address this Garmin need to have a separate setting for user-created points and turn-points. I hope they will improve this.

Related to the same changes the data fields "Distance to Next" and "Course Pt. Distance" behave differently than before and those also need some rework to be usable.

All in all Garmin did some changes but I don't think they thoroughly analyzed the use cases.

  • I am glad to see the issue as broad appeal, increases changes Garmin will address it. Sometime they just don't bother for a few hard core users.

Having the same issue on Edge 530.

The points are created by Garmin Connect. They used to be suppressed if TBT is switched on. I often ride known routes for which I do not want directions but still want Course Points (food, climb...) and found that turning off TBT caused all these extra course points to then appear. I complained to Garmin about this some time ago, now they’ve made it worse and you can’t get rid of them at all, even with TBT on.

The (work around) is to use RideWithGPS to create your Course. They allow direct control of the Course Points (Cue Sheet), turn off automatic generation and you can add your own only. You can export from GC any courses you have as a FIT and then import into RWGPS. Only downside is that RWGPS control of the Virtual Partner is not controllable as it is in GC.

Garmin are trying to support non-TBT devices and TBT devices in GC but as usual don’t think to allow the users control of what they get and do not get in a Course and subsequently cause one group or another issues in usability.

  • You can switch course point notification off on a per course basis on the Edge. Go to the course and scroll down to settings. There you will find an option to switch course points off.

Garmin Connect is not behaving correctly at the moment. I have a ticket open on the issue.

What is should do is for devices without routable maps it should generate and insert course points into the course file. For devices with routable maps it should only add any manually create course points to the file.

  • Not sure I understand - I like it the way it was: for any device (with or without routable maps) get a course with only my custom course points. I'm ok to just follow 'a magenta line', no need for actual navigation and I only want to see my custom course points like summit/food/... When GC is fixed - will it again behave this way? (unless I or someone else explicitly want to see automatically created course points)

The functionality you describe would be ideal for me but I would correct you on one point. Course Points are always generated by Garmin Connect, suppression of them on Routable devices was an on-device activity. This has been broken in the latest software (9.10 on the 1030 and 5.10 on the 530).

This is logical as Connect does not know what device it is creating a route for at the time it is plotted. That being said the easier and more user friendly option given that some people with non-routable device still do not want auto generated course points would be to let the user select whether or not they want them when plotting the course.

I know the above to true as (as I said above) I raised a ticket with Garmin a few months ago to question why, when I turned off TBT on my 530, I suddenly got course points at every turn instead and they advised that Course Points are generated to support non-TBT devices but that when a TBT device has TBT on they are suppressed - this was not ideal for me as I did not want directions at all - just a course with a distance and custom course points.

We all know you can turn of Course Points BTW, but we want our own still to show up.

jannk3 - I'd just use RiudeWithGPS it will do what you want

  • Thanks, I'm aware of that ... because I have to pay for RWGPS as this is a premium feature.

(otherwise I don't really care if automatically generated course points are suppressed or not generated at all - I just don't want to see them. It just drives me crazy to hear a beep in every single turn :) )
