Sync issues with two Edge devices recording the same activity

I am training indoors on a smart trainer with Zwift. I also use both an Edge 830 and 1030 to record two different power sources for comparisons.

Today after my workout, I went through the complete process of saving the ride on both devices. Only the Edge 830 sent its FIT file to Garmin Connect. I tried multiple syncs with the 1030 to no avail. When I checked the activity history on the 1030, the 830's activity was in the list, not the 1030's. What happened here? I recently updated both devices to the latest firmware. Shot in the dark since my hardware setup is fairly uncommon/redundant, but has anyone had this happen to them by chance?

  • Did you try a hardwire connection through express ?

I use a Fenix 6 and an edge 1030 together. Although now I just delete the edge activity prior to upload, previously I used to do it in connect and sometimes it seemed to take a while to upload or would only upload through connect. Not sure why just one of those peculiar garmin nuances.

  • Ok so I just re-read your message. Not sure why the fit file wouldn't be saved as well on the edge. I guess true up is syncing both devices, but I would have assumed it would still retain the original file on the edge. (as long as you definitely saved it ? :)

  • Definitely saved. I went through all the screens like adjusting nutrition/hydration and seeing my 7-day training load. And yeah I’d be shocked if it wasn’t a TrueUp bug.

I did sift through the 1030’s directory structure on my PC in hopes of finding the a FIT file in a temp folder or something, but no luck there either.

  • Out of curiosity I did a quick test today after my ride. I saved the ride on both devices, and both devices uploaded the files to connect. I waited for around 30 mins to ensure everything was synced, true up etc.. I then deleted the ride on the edge and almost instantly, true up put the fenix file onto the edge, with the usual picture of a bike to show the ride history was synced from true

I know its not a solution for you, just confirmation of how I would expect the devices to respond correctly to the above steps.

  • Today I noticed the clock was completely wrong on the 1030, and because it is set to an Indoor ride profile, the GPS has been off since updating to v9.10. Just turned the GPS on again and got the satellite fix. Let's see if this is the cause and if I have a ride uploaded to like Jan 1, 1970 or something.

  • Yep, this is exactly it. Not sure what was breaking with the date/time anomaly. Could have been that the data wasn't recording to a file at all or it was corrupt. Could just be the save process itself tripping over dates. Who knows? Glad I'm not a total idiot and figured it out eventually.

  • Good call !

I've had that 1970's ride file malarkey, but wouldn't have guessed it was the root of this problem.

    Glad you  sorted it out:)
