Can I put multiple maps on a micro SD card and use them?

I had the 48 states of the USA in a single map on a microSD card, and had inserted the card into my older Edge 1030.

I decided to update the map, but when I tried to include all 48 states, I received a message from the OpenFiets web site that the selected map was too large.  So I made two maps of the eastern and western halves of the country (with some overlap).  The site generated my two map files, I downloaded and unzipped them, and copied one to the micro SD card, renamed it to USEast_gmapsupp.img, then copied the other and renamed it to USWest_gmapsupp.img.

When I inserted the micro SD card into the Edge 1030 and turned the device on, I could see the following maps:

Basemap, Garmin Cycle Map Amer North 2019.20, Garmin DEM Map 2019.10, Garmin Geocode Map 2019.10, Garmin Cycle Map Amer Central 2019.20, and Openfietsmap Lite

I had expected to see two Openfiets maps, with the names I had assigned to them.

If I disable the Garmin Cycle Map, I get a different looking map when I go into Navigation/ Browse Map.  This makes me think the Edge is using the USWest map, since my street wouldn't be in the USEast map at all.

Can someone tell me if I did something wrong?

  • Unfortunately you can't just rename the img file you have to rename the internal map name too. There is an img rename utility here that you can use http://www.javawa.nl/imgname_en.html

You can also run into issues with overlapping map tiles on different maps as it can cause the tile not to be displayed at all even if you disable the map. There are utilities on the same website that enable you to check the tiles in each map

  • Your issue is that Img file contain a code and map name different from the file name. Your two file probably use the same map name. As somebody said there are utilities to help you. Alternatively on garmin.openstreetmap.nl there are recompiled map files you can download and those use different names.  It is when you do a custom map selection that a a generic name is used.

  • Thanks to both of you for helping me understand my problem!

I'll have to figure out a solution - maybe just most of the "lower 48".

One solution would be to download the OSM map versions that install into Basecamp on the PC, and then use Basecamp to install the maps onto the SD card. Basecamp will take care of correctly naming the maps and files.

  • This sounds like something I should at least learn more about.  I have installed Basecamp, but I know very little about using it. I just installed an update of the product, and downloaded the manual for PC users.  I did some searching, and found a video showing how to download a map for New Zealand and use it in Basecamp.

So now, I guess I have to try and make that work for my needs!  Thanks!

  • Hello I lost my Edge 540 and I was looking to buy 1040  but there is no sd card slot. How you can add a map of the country when you have no access to the internet? With Edge 540  I had many mini sd cards with countries that I was touring through

  • I assume you mean the Edge 530 model, rather than 540  The new Edge 1040 comes with 32GB (and the Edge 1030 Plus is also 32GB).  The Edge 1030 came with 16GB internal storage, and was the last "big form" model to offer a microSD slot.  That card could not exceed 32GB.

An Edge 1040 for North America comes standard with maps for North America and Europe.  Edge 1040's sold in Europe come with maps for Europe, Africa, and North America.  Maps for South America and Africa can be added at no cost, and all of them updated over time at no cost.  Only Edge 1040 units sold in Asia come with maps for Asia, probably due to character sets used on those maps.

There is enough memory to add another continent, or maybe both other continents.  So once you have your Edge 1040, you can install maps almost to your heart's content.  If you came up against internal memory constraints, you might have to delete one of the standard maps in order to add the maps you need, but that's unlikely.

Finally, if you were to purchase the Edge 1040 Solar, the internal memory is increased to 64GB as part of the $150 USD price hike.

  • Hello Colin

Thank you very much for your help in understanding the new edition of Garmin GPS. In the old days you had to buy maps and download them to mini sd cards but that's history, thank you again for the full answer
