Navigation verbal audio alerts with maps 2019.20.

After upgrading my maps on to the 2019.20 version there is a change I don't recall in the past. I have the 1030 connected to GCM on the phone. I have "Navigation Alerts' turned on in GCM. Now when I am approaching a turn onto a street with the word "road" in the name, and the map will show something like "Left on Oakview Rd", my phone audio will say "turn left on Oakview 'R','D'" ie ARE,DEE. It does not pronounce the word road, but just sounds out the letters. It didn't use to do this. Not sure if this is a problem with GCM, with the 2019.20 maps or what. Anyone else experience this. On other things like "Ave" it will say the word "avenue" so I know it works elsewhere.

I noticed this on a ride today. Also turn left in 50 EM and turn right in 1.2 KAY EM.

It did not do that before.

  • Yes, I had to warranty my Edge 1030 after I posted this, and the refurbished one came with 2019.10 version and the navigation alerts say the word "Road" rather than "RD". I also see in the map that the words like "Road", "Avenue" etc. are fully spelled out in the display in 2019.10 versus my 830 which has 2019.20 where they are abbreviated "Rd", "Ave". etc. So apparently Garmin compiled the new map with abbreviations, perhaps to save space?, and then must have made voice definitions for some of them to speak out the whole word rather than the abbreviation. But they skipped some stuff. Needless to say, I am not going to upgrade my 1030 to the new maps. When the next version comes out, I will test on the 830 and see if it fixes the problem before upgrading 1030.

  • This problem still happens on 2020.10 which I just upgraded to this weekend. Common Garmin. Can't you fix this? "Rd." is still pronounced "ARE-DEE" coming to every intersection. This is USA maps.
