GRouteLoader IQ app/widget

GRouteLoader is an IQ app/widget lets you download routes/courses directly from RWGPS or Garmin Connect to your Garmin Connect IQ enabled device using the number of the route/course.

GRouteLoader also lets you download your pinned routes from RWGPS.

There is the RWGPS IQ app but GRouteLoader lets you download any public route (that you have the number for).

It also lets you download locations from sendpoints.us (a website that creates a 4 digit number for a location you searched for).

There is a “widget” version (which can be used during an activity) as well as an “app” version.

Lots of detail here:

GRouteLoader can also be used to display a list of rides from websites like those run by bicycle clubs (the club has to code the website but it's not that hard).

  • GRouteLoader now lets you download your pinned routes from RWGPS.

  • Last time I used this app it only showed RWGPS apps by their route number.  No actual text or route name that you might generate in RWGPS.  That was just useless in my opinion as I can’t even find the route number.

  • The route number is in the URL for the route page (see image below). Garmin Connect works the same way. Other people  managed to figure it out. It can be a little more work to get the number on a mobile device.

The app didn't show the "showed RWGPS apps by their route number". It lets you enter the number of the route you wanted to download.

In any case, the new version of the app lets you download routes from a list of your pinned routes (with names). That's a better way to way to download a route anyway.

  • Correct me if I'm being stupid.  I can see the route number when at RWGPS in a web browser IF I go looking for the URL ?.  But in order to access that route from your app while using a device, I would have needed to go look up the route number, remember it, then access it from your app ?.

OR, I can use the RWGPS app on the device, which lists pinned routes BY NAME as well as recently accessed routes BY NAME. Which app do you think I'm going to use ?

I would be happy to give your app another try IF YOU LISTED ROUTES BY NAME !.  But I/m not bothering with a such a tedious process by trying to remember route numbers.  Sorry.

  • You could use the RWGPS app it's all personal preference. Grouteloader supports downloading from multiple sources & previously I used RWGPS, Sendpoints & GImporter so 3 apps were replaced by 1.

It is also available as a widget, which allows you to download whilst already recording an activity, which RwGPS & Garmin Connect cannot do.

  • "I would have needed to go look up the route number, remember it, then access it from your app?"

No, no one would really remember it. They'd type it while looking at the phone screen.

Keep in mind that the ability to do this came before the RWGPS app. There wasn't any way of directly downloading RWGPS routes (your only option was to upload the route to yet another website and download it from there).

"I would be happy to give your app another try IF YOU LISTED ROUTES BY NAME !. "

You aren't reading stuff very carefully.

I said the app now lets you download your pinned routes as a new feature.

I also said "In any case, the new version of the app lets you download routes from a list of your pinned routes (with names)."

You could always download them by number (like any route). So, it makes no sense to assume that is what I was talking about when talking about pinned routes.

  • "You could use the RWGPS app it's all personal preference."

The RWGPS IQ app also lets you download your pins but only the 10 most recently-pinned ones. As you pointed out, the RWGPS app doesn’t come as a widget (so you can’t use it while recording an activity). The RWGPS app only works on Edge devices (so, you are out-of-luck if you have a watch or a hiking unit).

"...so 3 apps were replaced by 1."

And the really cool feature of the app is that it makes it easy to have your bicycle club's website on the device.

  • Thanks for your patience and replies.  I'll load it up and get you some feedback.

  • Cool.

The app took an insane amount of time to write (like 2 months).

It might be crazy, but I have a strong interest in having it be useful for people.

Downloading the route by number isn’t ideal but it might be better than alternatives.

Getting the pin list is clearly preferable but it took some sleuthing to figure out how to do that.

  • No longer available in the current Edge firmware version.  New IQ Apps API?
