Firmware 9 Bug? - Device Transfers not working

I have 1030 now on 9.0 firmware and Edge 830 now on firmware 5.0 Since this upgrade, device transfers between the two are not working either way. I can set the one device up that will share the file all the way up to sharing the specific course. The receiving device will get to the point where it sees the other device (ie the 1030 sees the 830 that is sharing the file or vice versa) but when I click the device, nothing but the spinning circle ever displays, even leaving it for several minutes. Has anyone else had device transfers working since this new firmware?

  • Same behaviour here with 2 Edge 1030 - both on v9.0!

  • It's working for me and my wife. Both on 1030 with FW9. I had this problem before with previous FW. At the time, resetting both Edges solve my problem.

  • Miraculous!

I just did another test with 2 Edge 1030 - one 9.0, the other b8.06:

no success - everlasting spinning wheel until timeout!

  • This feature has never been reliable for years. It is painfully slow and seldom work. Nothing new for 9.0

  • I've just tried the same thing on the same devices (830 on 5.00 and 1030 on 9.00).

I managed to transfer one file successfully but then it consistently failed. I tried 10 or 15 attempts, making sure my phone wasn't connected, and disabling wifi on both but it refused to transfer anything.

I then powered off and on both devices (as opposed to sleep), and after that I could transfer every single time, in both directions with no failures, and I tried up to 18 course files at once. I did something like 5 sets of transfers in each direction, deleting the course files on the target before transferring. It worked 100% every single time. I even tried putting the devices to sleep and waking them up and it still worked after that.

It would therefore seem that sleep can cause instability, certainly on the 1030 that battery bug still exists on sleeping so I usually try and remember to power off after saving a ride but often the device is in sleep mode before I remember to.

It's possible to disable auto sleep under the auto features in each profile, but for me the risk of a flat battery is bigger than the risk of occasional instability, so I'll leave that on and try and remember to power off instead.

Interested to see if that works for anyone else.

Who'd have thought that turning it off and on again could fix it eh?

  • I've tried many times doing a cold reboot of the devices, and still cannot get device transfers to work. They used to work before this most recent upgrade. In fact I never thought about it, just did the transfer when I wanted. I did try turning off wifi and disconnect phone, still no transfer. I may try factory reset next and see if it makes a difference.

  • it’s not something I’ve used a lot, but was hoping I’d found a fix, sounds like it’s not that easy. Shame.

  • Maybe you could look at RWGps new IQ applet. You can send pinned or recent routes to your Edge. Since we're both connected, we now use this app to send routes directly to each of our Edges.

I know it's not the solution for those having problems with Device Transfers but it could be used instead in certain situations.

  • Finally got around to wasting a couple hours doing a device reset on both 830 and 1030. Still no device transfers :( Then upgraded to 9.02/5.02 on the respective units, still no device transfers. I like transfers when I was out at the trailhead with a friend and no internet signal there, could still send him the course. They worked before this summer. Can't recall last time it worked, but I know it worked in summer.
