Hi,

I did a hard reset with the power button at least 15 times, of which maybe 3 times it booted successfully.
Mine updated today just before a ride. Update appeared to go ok. Once riding, though, it kept shutting off. I would power it back up and unpause the ride and within minutes it would turn off again...WTH…
My 1030 is behaving exactly like that! I have a two-day A-race this weekend and this is very upsetting...I am sick of Edge bugs! I would happily trade functions and features for stability.
If you have a bad block on the storage, aren't you concerned that you will trip over it again at some point?
Yes, I‘m concerned!
Since v8.0 I have file-allocation problems on both of my Edge 1030 from time to time. I‘ve reported to Garmin and they stated:
The 7.85..8.00 software did represent a fairly large change in the filesystem, but it’s supposed to be safer for partially writing files and causing corruption. I’ll see if the hardware guy needs to know any information from your unit and reach out. I haven’t heard of other reports of this yet.

Can't you use the aux storage slot as a spot to save the activities?
I do! But there are other files affected too, from time to time. The other day the file EPO.bin in folder GPS was affected with a file-allocation-error and not valid anymore.
I don't know what Garmin used to create their operating system but I have never felt that the file structure is very robust. I've been working with computers since 1980 and my experience has led me to believe this. I've learned to be very careful to avoid having too many activity files on the device as well as courses. I have seen serious problems when too many activities are on Garmin computers even when there is plenty of memory left. I worked on a 705 about two years ago and I never could correct the problems with the files. This computer was once connected to a Mac which always puts a trash folder on anything it connects too and that folder caused most of the problems since it is very difficult to delete using a Windows machine. I have helped friends with corrupted files and I know that there was nothing that they did to cause the corruption.
I think Garmin should start over and move to the Android OS. It is a very stable OS and there are many really sharp software engineers that could port Garmins features over to Android. Hammerhead tried using Android with their Karoo but that turned out to be a disaster. I'm sure with Garmins resources they could do better.
They use FAT which is an old filesystem and is vulnerable to corruption, especially when unplugged from a PC if changes haven’t been fully written, compounded by the storage being slow. I’ve seen corrupted storage a lot and would normally reformat the device on a windows machine to fix it. It’s risky to do it on a Mac as it can overwrite the boot and stop the Garmin from starting. Aweatherall posted a way of reformatting the storage natively I think recently. Corruption should be a lot rarer these days as there’s less need to plug into a PC than there used to be but it’s clearly still happening
I do agree the OS is hitting issues that would be resolved on something like Android but at this point there’s so much investment in the existing OS that it would be a major change with a huge amount of work to stabilise and build in all the features. Still, it may be necessary at some point.
I know it's a fat file system but I'm wondering what language was use to produce the Garmin OS. It must be one of the older languages that are difficult to modify since Garmin produces a fix and many times adds in a problem.
Concerning corruption problems when unplugging from a PC. Windows started using a feature called "Quick Removal" a long time ago. I think it was in the later versions of Win 7. You will find it under drive policies. Which means you can pull out a SD card without going through the safe eject procedure. I've been just pulling out the SD cards for years and I've never had a problem. Quick removal is normally set to on by default.
Updated to v9.0 not too long ago and that’s when all my problems began. What’s up with this thing shutting off 5-6 times mid ride? One, it’s dangerous to have a rider constantly having to *** with their computer during a ride. 2. We’re loving ride data. 3. It’s not recording portions of our rides.
Extremely frustrating to spend this much money on a product that is this unreliable.
I reached out to Garmin last weekend regarding my Garmin 1030 either shutting off or getting a LiveTrack message every 30 seconds during a ride. They had me plug my Garmin into my Mac and delete 5 different file folders in my Garmin which has seemed to work. Customer service was on top of the issue.
