Firmware Version 9.00 Available

Heya Garmin Team - I absolutely love the fact that you are working on a faster cycle to get firmware updates to us its fantastic. One thing that I would like is the ability to download the new version when you put a sticky up there is a new version out. globe. Are you able to provide the file like you do with Beta versions to people that frequent the forums? Given the fixes and updates in the change log I hate waiting for the new version and often find myself plugging my device into my computer constantly over 3 - 5 days in order to get the new version. Typically I miss the weekend rides with the new version because the firmware isn't available for me until Monday. Being as weekend warrior with the Garmin device I have to wait to the following weekend to give it a run :)

  • Two possible reasons these are rolled out slowly:

    1- less load on the server the file is downloaded from. That way, everybody's downloads aren't slow.

    2- if there a surprise show-stopping problem with the version, not everybody will have it and it would be possible to stop the release.

    It's an approach that reduces risk.

  • Yep thanks for the reply and I understand the two points that you made but surely Gamin have more than one server globally and use a load balancing approach much the same as any other mature company? Moreover, the largest thread from reads in this forum is ~4000 so I am not sure that it adds a significant overhead. Secondly, the people who install beta firmware from forums know that there is an element of risk associated with any new release and are ok with it......

  • Given that most of the time the servers would be idle, why waste money to be able to release stuff to everybody at the same time? Doing that wouldn't reduce the risk either.

    Heck, even Apple doesn't roll things out to everybody all at once.

    It's odd that you think (based on nothing) that Garmin hasn't considered any of this in choosing what they did.

    This is so a few people can get it a few days earlier?

    Sounds like a case of you can't please everybody.

  • Apple doesn't take 3 - 5 days to make an iOS version available globally. I also made no inclination of how Garmin arrived at their decision not to provide the firmware in these forums although I believe that you may well have :) - risk. I am also not sure that asking for the firmware file in these forums when it is released is a significant ask given the traffic through the threads.  This can be gained by someone copying it to a Google drive then providing the link in the forums as GPLama did last time the new firmware version came out. I respect your feedback, and its not that I am not pleased by Garmin - quite the opposite actually, I just wished I could have access to the newer firmware faster which I don't think is an extraordinary ask especially given I can install beta firmware the minute it comes out.

  • It takes longer for Apple to roll out releases that 3-5 days. I think I got 13 like 10 days later.

    ===============

    You are mushing two things together.

    1- rolling out a firmware version to everybody at once (I pointed out reasons why that might not be a good idea).

    2- letting people get the production version as a beta.

    ===============

    It's likely few people install the betas.

    Garmin releases the betas one way. The few people who want to try the beta download it when they choose.

    You want Garmin to release the production versions two ways.

    One that serves Garmin no real purpose (beyond letting a few people get it a few days earlier).

  • I’d like to see the option to manually download new versions in the same way as downloading the beta. It would help Garmin as it would allow the more techie early adopters to report any issues earlier, and gives them quicker access to fixes if they’re running the beta. I get the reasons for a slower automated rollout but there should be a manual way to speed it up for those of us who like to try things ASAP.

    Apple allow you to manually update your devices as soon as an update is released.

  • Agreed. I have to mess about trying to find these partlal roll-out updates to push out videos on the new features. (so if anyone has 9.0... hook me up with the gcd!) ;)

  • Thinking more on this. If a unit has a previous beta I'd like to see the final/cooked/public release rolled out as a priority to get the unit off beta. The number of us messing about here in the forums and manually installing beta firmware can't be large?

  • Yes this is the frustration , we are testing beta,  then wait 10 days after everybody has installed final version

    This is not fair !

  • Releasing the new version like they do the betas makes more sense than wanting Garmin to release it to everyone at the same time.

    The number of people who choose to install the beta is likely small (and it serves a purpose).

    The number of people choosing to download the production version might be much, much higher. If so, releasing it like a beta could defeat the purpose of the gradual rollout.
