Looking at possible Upgrade from Mio Cyclo 505 HC to Edge 1030

Hi All

I use a Mio Cyclo 505 HC and was happy with the device, but due to gravity, it is no more, so looking to replace it, plus a 2nd for my wife.

I have been considering the 1030, as it has better battery for extended rides and with the additional battery pack, it will suit my needs, but I have some concerns that for a pricey bit of kit it has some flaws that I would like to know to address if I purchased a 1030

First I am not looking to measure myself against top end athletes or groups and club riders and the power readings they need, but the ability to have a device that will communicate with others in a group when touring and show their relative location would be a useful thing to have.

However, I do appreciate the readings for heart, cadence etc, to improve my own health and targets, and seeing where I sit in general on Strava especially when touring over a 5 day period.

I also like the idea of seeing most popular tracks/routes in an area to ride

My primary needs is as a reliable navigation device, importing GPX, navigating on the fly from the device - to cope with road or route closures or diversions, when in unknown areas.

I have read on these forums about terrible routing issues with the Garmin maps installed on the device that they have issues with UK roads and will route in the most roundabout way.

What advice would you give regarding this issue and how to overcome this problem in easy steps (as some suggest changing the map), as a person not used to Garmin, this seems daunting.

Garmin is seen as a  leader in Bike computers and Navigation, so you will appreciate my concern that a expensive bit of kit designed to bike navigation, has somewhat dubious routings when it is needed

Thanks for any pointers you can give

    Hi,

I have the 1030 for 3 years now, and it's a great device.

Battery is fantastic, and the information and apps are just a world of possibilities.

The problem is always the same:

You can't trust the software. It never works as it should. The bugs are always every where and so, even striating with "I have it for 3...", I have also a Wahoo ROAM.

    It won't fail.

    It works perfectly.

It's true that you don't have a 1000 apps, you just have what you have, but what you have work as it should.

The follow you app/e-mail, so who ever you want can follow your track, never fail.

Well, I try for 3 years to convence myself that the 1030 was the best of the best, but you know... I do prefer to have a Mercedes working, than a Lamborghini that never works.

    That's my point of view.

  • I have my 1030 from last october, lets say that I did ~8-10.000 km since then

    I never lost a ride!

    Never freeze while riding!

Only with last beta I had an small gitch (it did not start) but I fix it by holding power button

For more than a half of riding I used navigation, while is not perfect ( and I think will never be like a phone) I never get lost

I had wahoo bolt 6 months , I can say that the had more issues than garmin with software

From the first day they try to fix "long rides" and for every firmware its the same "fix"

As it was a great device, buttons are unreliable and fell apart after 6 months( wahoo replace my device for free)

Beep and display was better on wahoo

Navigation while using a route was ok, but not following a route was crappy!

For every thing that I want to do with it, I had to use different ecosystem

I think that Garmin has evolved also from software stability

Thank you for your responses, but was hoping to receive answers to my original questions regarding the UK routing issues and possible solutions and how to implement them

You will appreciate that without answers on how to rectify the UK navigation issues, I am rather reluctant to shell out £1000 + on two devices, because  if and  when I need them, they do not do what they are supposed to do, navigate from A to B in unknown territory in shortest bike friendly routes on road unless I set way points

I also, like the idea of the Garmin group track, extended battery pack, emergency contact and the additional whistles and bells in one neat device.

However, now having read the forums in depth for the various Garmin devices,  it seems that as this is a UK issue only, plus Garmin has shown no interest in correcting the issue to date, which is a concern if spending a large sum of money on their devices.

I appreciate new devices have teething issues, but that time has past

So, any helpful advice would be much appreciated

  • maybe it s a issue with Garmin maps in Uk, you can always use third party maps

  • Mick, This post has some discussion regarding routing issues with the Garmin maps & some possible solutions.

    https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1030/170459/major-navigation-issues-with-garmin-1030-and-820-devices

I'm in the UK and the Garmin routing annoyances led me to install 3rd party maps on my edge. Although not perfect the routing is miles better.

Thanks for the link, but as a complete novice to Garmin, there are still areas that are unknown and of concern.   I understand about 3rd party maps, I understand they can be downloaded, but I intend to use a Micro SD card on the device so:

    • where do they go on the device, in what location/file,
    • do they need a special name or suffix,
    • how do you enable them to be the default map,
    • can you still navigate to POI's
    • do they reduce functionality in any way

Sorry for my ignorance, but for experienced users, it can be forgotten that some of us have no history of Garmin use so it is like the dark arts to set a device up

    • where do they go on the device, in what location/file

They can be stored in the \Garmin folder on either the main unit storage or SD card

    • do they need a special name or suffix,

The default map file name on download from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ is gmapsupp.img (I use the Generic Routable (New Style))This can be used as it is unless you want to load more than one map.

The files can be renamed but must still be a .img file & multiple maps of different names can be used like that. However this simple rename doesn't change the map name as seen in the Garmin Edge Map List as it's embedded in the file. To do this you need to use something like http://www.javawa.nl/imgname_en.html to change the embedded data

    • how do you enable them to be the default map

In the Navigation settings for each Activity Profile you can choose which maps are enabled for that profile

    • can you still navigate to POI's

    Yes

    • do they reduce functionality in any way

I think the only functionality loss would be Garmin's Popularity Routing, which I think is embedded in the Garmin Maps I haven't seen anything else only improvements. I find routes calculate quicker & POI/Place name searches are much quicker

Many thanks for that, it is very helpful, I think there needs to be a sticky on such information or a Idiots Guide  How to section, so such invaluable information is found in one place and stop new users (and may be experienced users) asking such questions, or can be pointed to

One more question, not owning a Garmin yet, does the device auto create a Garmin file on SD card, or do you need to create one, and if so what do you name it ?

This would mean I can at least be ahead of the game when I order the devices

  • The unit will set up the SD card.

You won't need an SD card (there's more than enough internal space).

dpawlyk  - thanks for the reply, but I would rather keep anything I add or change with mapping on the SD card to ensure I do not screw anything up.
