Garmin point to point navigation algorithms

Hi all.

Does anybody know whether the algorithms or parameters that define a route can be tweaked? I recently plotted a 21km  route from Warwick to Cawston (nr Rugby, UK), along quiet lanes and smaller A roads, using popularity routing too. For some reason, when I came to set off, I was unable to activate the "Ride" button on my 1030, so couldn't use my course. No worries, I thought, I will just set Cawston as my destination and let the Garmin direct me. A while after leaving Warwick my general direction just felt wrong, so I checked the screen with "distance to destination" on it and found that I still had 35km to go. As I was hoping to catch the Tour of Britain peloton, I pushed hard to make it on time but then, coincidentally, happened upon the race some 8km before my planned rendezvous point. This meant that I was now behind the race and couldn't really use the course I'd plotted to take me from Cawston to the finish, so once again I used the Garmin point to point navigation to take me from where I was, to Burton Dasset (the finish). Again, as I rode, it felt wrong direction wise (retracing my steps rather than cutting across), but I followed it and it got me where I needed to be in reasonable time.

Upon examining the ridden route later, I realised that the software had indeed taken me on a longer loop than necessary, effectively going up and around clockwise, rather than more straight across.

So, with apologies for the long post, does anybody have any thoughts on why Garmin managed to add 10+ km to my route for no good reason that I can see? Link to the ride below in case it's of interest.
