Upcoming Road Name

I've just upgraded to an Edge 1030 from the Edge 1000.

I've used Garmins for many years.

On the 1000 while riding NOT navigating using an OS microSD card I used to get the name of the next road showing on the top of the map screen. While riding using the 1030 with Garmin Europe cycle maps I just get riding EAST, WEST or whatever cardinal direction I'm cycling.

Have I missed a setting or is this normal please?

I found the same with the Australian version of garmin's supplied maps. I wasn't happy with the way they displayed, the way names displayed, how the roads appeared and some of the routing.

I installed OSM maps alongside the originals and use these instead. The original maps are still there just in case but the OSM ones work better for me

  • When you not navigating how does the unit know what your next road will be? What I know is when your not navigating and you set the navigation directions or something to map you will see the name of the road you are currently on.

  • The unit knows which road you're on and in which direction you're travelling so it should know the nae of the upcoming road.

It works with OS mapping but not it seems with Garmin maps, unless as per my OP I'm missing something in the settings.

  • Besides the practical use I still can't understand how this can work reliable. Riding along a road I can go left or right at a certain point. Where I live the road to the left has most likely a different road name as the road to the right.

  • yes and it will adjust accordingly. I've just installed OSM on a micro SD card and it works fine now.

  • Nothing is perfect.

In practice, it works pretty well.

Roads that have different names on opposite sides of the road isn't that common.

And you might be better-off knowing the the name of the street on the right side than nothing.

  • Using the map screen on my Garmin 1000, I used to get the name of the next upcoming street. I just did a factory reset and updated the unit. Now it no longer shows the names of the upcoming street only showing the name of the street that I am riding on. Although I like to know the name of the street that I am riding on, I would like to once again see the name of the next upcoming street because, while riding in a group, I am given instructions where to turn. If I don't see the name of the upcoming streets I don't know when to make the turn. Is there someway to get back to the way it was before or someway to select one mode or the other?

  • That is an option under navigation for the activity profile. You probably need to set the options properly to replicate what you had on the Edge 1000.

  • I don't have a option under navigation to change from showing current street name to upcoming street.

  • What’s the option I need to set?
