How do I integrate HR monitor (eg Apple Watch) with Strava and a bike computer (eg Garmin Edge 1030)?
I'm fairly new to biking in general and have only previously used a very simple bike computer.
Current setup
Bike: Trek SL 6 (2017)
Sensors: Bontrager DuoTrap S Digital Sensor
Computer: Bontrager Trip 300 Bike Computer
App: Strava Summit
HR: Apple Watch series 4
NEW (possible)
Bike: Trek SLR 9
Sensors: Duo + Qarq power meter
Computer: Garmin Edge Bontrager 1030
App: Strava Summit
HR: Apple Watch series4 vs ??? (eg chest strap sensor)
  • I would suggest you get a heart rate strap that supports ANT+ and/or Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE).  I'm pretty sure  the Apple watch can't broadcast heart rate over BTLE. It certainly can't broadcast over ANT+.

The Edge 1030 supports receiving heart rate via ANT+ or BTLE.  Earlier models only support receiving via ANT+ only.

  • Thanks. I have an ANT+ HR chest strap but was hoping to use my Apple Watch since I wear it anyway and would have used Strava from the Watch (for HR collection). I guess you don't run Strava with Garmin 1030 but it just uploads when done for analyses?

  • HR strap is generally more accurate than an optical sensor.

Yes, I have Garmin & Strava kinked, so my rides upload automatically.

  • Hey Mike, I know this is an old post, but I was wondering if you've found a solution for connecting the HR monitor on your Apple Watch to your 1030? If you still want to do this then have a look at Navigr8. The Navigr8 watch app cannot broadcast directly to the cycling computer, because Apple Watch doesn't have the capability to broadcast as a Bluetooth peripheral, but the iPhone does. So Navigr8 first transmits your HR from your watch to your phone and then broadcasts it from your phone to the head unit. It works really well!

  • Thank you for the reply. I ended up getting a Garmin HR monitor. In the overall scheme of my bike spending it was nothing. Just seemed like the Apple HR monitor should be able to be used.

Could you possibly tell more how to set it for Edge 1030 please?

  • Hi,

Sorry for the slow response, I just saw your question.

First up you need to have Navigr8 pro, which allows you to connect bluetooth peripherals.

On your watch go to Settings>Sensors and make sure the "Use Bluetooth" switch is ON. Scroll to the bottom of the page and there is an option for your heart rate, as measured by your watch, to be sent your phone. Note this will only happen when you are tracking your run or ride.

On you phone open Navigr8 and go to settings>Sensors. Make sure "Use Bluetooth" is ON. On the bottom of the page is a setting called "Broadcast". Choose "Heart Rate".

Now if you start recording on your phone it will act as a bluetooth peripheral and appear on your 1030 as a heart rate monitor that you connect to just like an ordinary heart rate monitor.

    I hope that helps.

  • To pair Apple Watch HR function with Garmin Edge, purchase Heartbeatz device; it's small and light (rounded 2"x1" by .3" deep) and you can store it in your saddle bag.  https://npe-inc.com/heartbeatz/.  Make sure to install the heartbeatz app on your phone and widget on your watch.  To use,  start the widget program.  Once started, you can pair with your Edge unit as you would any other heartbeat monitor.  Easy and reliable.  I would suggest using the "lock screen" function on the Heartbeatz widget and not use any other fitness program on your Apple Watch to ensure continuous connectivity.  Using the Heartbeatz widget on your watch will automatically store exercise info on your apple fitness app as well, so no need to start the Apple fitness app.

  • BlueHeart is a free software solution which uses your iPhone as a bridge between the watch and the Garmin, no other hardware required, and no subscription cost like Navigr8
