Rain & GPS

Hi folks,

I've just got back from a ride - the last couple of miles or so were in a torrential downpour, and I mean torrential. During and after the rain the unit lost the GPS so didn't record speed or gradient and the touch screen was going bonkers! It kept changing screens, going to different menus all sorts of things. Each time I dried it it worked - then ANY water droplets on the screen caused it to go nuts again - I was riding in the dry (after the rain had stopped) and there were three droplets of water at the top of the screen - this kept causing the device to swipe the top of the screen down.

Can anyone suggest anything that will prevent this from happening in future?

Thanks,

Rich

    Lock the screen :)

  • I've ridden in really heavy rain, both brief and prolonged, and have never had this issue. The only issue I get in rain is that the barometric conditions cause the altimeter to not work properly, so I get inaccurate gradient readings and have to adjust the altitude gain post-ride.To me, your problem sounds like a faulty device.

  • Activity Profiles -> [select activity] -> Touch Sensitivity = Low.  "Low decreases touch sensitivity and improves performance when rain or sweat touch the screen"
I was having similar problems while riding in the rain yesterday so I changed the touch sensitivity to Low and everything worked fine after that.

  • Same issue here (living in Seattle, so a real/daily issue for me). Does the touch sensitivity or silicone case or other work?

As previously suggested, just lock the screen. Once you've started an activity, press the power button briefly, and you should see a "touchscreen locked" message briefly appear at the top of the screen. You'll still be able to swipe between screens, but none of the other touchscreen functions will work until you unlock the screen by briefly pressing the power button again.

  • I had the same thing some weeks ago with a screen protector. Screens randomly changing and no response to swipes. I stopped to remove the screen protector, and 1030 was working perfectly in heavy rain. Even on high sensitivity.

  • Thanks for that. Rain thing nearly ruined few of my spins.

  • There is also a remote control for the Edge units. It works really good and you can have the screen locked and still switch screens with the remote.

I've set the programmable button to bring up the map so I quickly can see the course if I don't understand the turn notification.

  • Get a speed sensor. I have never had issues with data logging in torrential rain dumps. The speed sensor tells the unit that we are moving
