My total ascent stopped working on my Edge 1030. It just stays at 0 the entire ride. I looked to see if I could manually set the altitude (around 612), and the altitude shows above 65,617. When I change it to 612, it just changes back to 65,617.

It looks like you hit an error condition where the value has exceed the max supported size. I would contact Garmin support. They will likely suggest doing a reset. If that does not fix it then the unit will likely need to be replaced.
Same with my device - Total Ascent DISPLAY stopped working Tuesday 30-Jul - does not display on a data screen and history shows a flat ride (!). Happily, data is still captured > does not display on Garmin Connect, but DOES display on Strava. So the data is there...
Current elevation shows 39', changed to 122' and the setting held.
Will call Garmin Support in the morning ...
Update: Clarification from Garmin Support - Strava attains elevation gain from mapping, not from device (this explains the variances observed on some rides).
Suggested setting current elevation and seeing if that corrected the issue (done and no). No other trouble shooting. Warranty exchange in process.
