Shockingly inaccurate. On flats it’s flashing up between -15% and plus 20%. Never had issue on my 1000.

Does it happen every time? I had gradient issues on a ride in the Lakes, never got a reading steeper than 5% even on Hardknott. However, it reverted to normal service next time I used it. It's an issue I've occasionally experienced on other Garmin units, and I assume it's caused by unusual barometric conditions.
Check that nothing is covering or blocking the port used for the barometric sensor.
It is the two small wholes on the back of the unit. The 4 small holes are for the speaker.
I had a similar issue (maybe not as bad as you have decribed). I had noticed that my speed sensor (Bontrager) had been temporomental, I removed it and the gradient returned to normal operation. Probably not the same issue, but I throught it was worht posting.
