Edge 1030 not showing downloaded maps

I Recently purchased, downloaded, and installed (using Garmin Express) the EU cycling maps. After a seemingly successful install I went in to the device and activated the maps then went to a map page on the Edge 1030 unit however; the maps are not showing any data in Europe. I have tried re-installing the maps and also de-activating the default North America maps to see if this would work. It did not.

The only help I got from support was - "well it will PROBABLY work once you get over there and the device recognizes that you are there". This is not very re-assuring. I would like to be able to verify that the maps are working as this will be my only navigation device while riding and do not want to have to do troubleshooting while I am over there. Does anyone have any experience with maps in different regions? Do they "magically" start working once you are in the region or did I miss a step when installing the maps?

Thanks,

  • You cannot see European maps if you (the blue triangle) are in USA.

To check if the maps are installed: Be sure to have enabled the Basemap and the European maps, then zoom out as much as possible, then move the map over to Europe, then zoom in.

If your check is positive, then... yes, they start „magically“ working, when you are in Europe.

  • So when I zoom out then back in should there be roads displaying in Europe? the only thing I see is the general outline of the continent.

  • If you see the general outlines of the continent you are far to much zoomed out. Move the general map to the middle of Europe and then zoom in as long as possible.

I assume you have enabled Europe map in the Nav-Setup of your Edge, and you can see the 2 map-files (.img) in the Edge-directory /Garmin?

And - yes, you should see roads and paths if you zoom in totally.

  • Yes. when I zoom in, there are still no streets visible. I have tested with multiple different detail levels as well as disabling the North America maps and having only the EU maps enabled. Nothing - at any zoom level - seems to help.

I'm not entirely sure, there are some .img files with seemingly random names in the Garmin directory on the SD card (D4713060C.img, D4728110B.img, D6016020B.img, D6017020B.img. I'm thinking those are probably the EU files but I'm not entirely sure.

I am going to re-format the SD card and attempt installing the maps again tonight and see how it goes.

    Thanks for you help.

  • What you can try:

install Garmin‘s PC program BASEMAP on your computer.

Connect your Edge to your computer and open Basemap. Basemap will read all installed maps from your Edge and you can chose it. It‘s another way to check if they are there.

  • You probably mean Basecamp, not basemap.

  • Yes, sorry -  Basecamp!

  • BASECAMP is the name of the PC program!

  • I typically test my maps (in my case US maps), by creating a route, uploading to 1030 and then loading it on the device  If I see the streets in preview mode, all is good!!

  • Ok, I see the maps in Basecamp. I'm assuming that means they are installed correctly then and the "magic" will commence once I get in the EU?
