Blue halo again

My replacement unit starts showing the blue halo again after 6 months. I will send it in again because for me it is unacceptable. Is there an official statement that this issue is solved and how can I check if the new unit I will get has a display that doesn't show a blue halo after a couple of months?

  • When I got my unit replaced Garmin said that the new screens have been out since January-February 2019.  Any unit shipped after this time will have the new screen both new units and refurbished units.

Agreed on the refurb unit quality. I sent my 18 month old unit back for the halo and the refurb unit is like new. Also has the 86..04.00 tsc version

    Same over here.
Seems the issue is not the first batch, but the time you use the device.

Will get a new device next week, but issue seems to repeat when using the device above average.
So within 6 months the issue will be also on the new device, but then out of guarantee.

Together with the very bad LiveTrack function, I (and my wife) will consider staying with Garmin or go over to Wahoo, like others do.
Seems Garmin is his own biggest competitor. When do they become aware of this and starting to improve the quality of their products instead of putting > 10 new products on the market every year, with innoative things on it no one uses.

  • My units starting to show the blue halo after 6 months and I use the unit about 10 hours per week. I was wondering if there are people with a 1030 that don’t show the blue halo after the same hours of use.

  • I have a 1030 that is a replacement for my first one that developed the blue halo.  This replacement is also showing the halo.  This unit shows 386 rides, 904+ hours, and 19961km of usage. (I think these numbers might be the total of both the original and replacement units, because I backed up everything on the original and loaded it onto the replacement.

I have another 1030 (long story) that so far shows no signs of the blue halo.  It shows 60 rides, 140+ hours, and 3105km of usage.

Both units have the same TSC version: 85.11.0.

This leads me to believe that the TSC version is not indicative of whether the faulty screen is present.

  • My original unit didn't show the halo for awhile.  The replacement showed the halo within a few months.  A third unit I have hasn't shown the halo at all so far, after about six months.

  • I'm not sure that I follow your logic here. You say you have two 1030's both showing the halo and both with TSC 85.11.0 and you conclude that the TSC version is not linked?

I could understand you thinking this if one of them was 86.04.00.

  • Call Garmin Support and ask them if your unit serial number is affected by the screen recall.  This is the best way to know if your screen is the older version or the re-designed one.  The blue halo does not appear right away.  From what you describe the unit that shows no sign of blue halo has only 140 hours on it and will probably get the blue halo like your 904 hour unit did.

I had excellent customer support from Garmin when I called them (don't email - call them).  They looked up my serial number in heir database and found that I had a screen susceptible to blue halo.  They sent me a refurbished unit with the 86.04.00 screen.  My unit was out of warranty and they still replaced it, no questions asked.

  • May I conclude that you have now a unit with a 86.04.00 screen that you used for more than 300 hours that don't show a bleu halo?

  • No, I said the newer unit does NOT have a blue halo.
