LiveTrack step by step instructions

I was so fed up with Garmin that I started to fill out a Chat form on the Garmin Help web page, but decided to try one more time to get LiveTrack working

The following worked for me several times today:

Turn off iPhone and Garmin edge.

iPhone 7+ (iOS ver 12.3.1): turn on phone

Edge 1030 Bontrager model with Software Ver 7.5: turn on only after iPhone turned back on

iphone>settings>Bluetooth: On my phone, only Edge 1030 Bontrager will be Connected. The other Edge BT connection called BT_Edge 1030 Bontrager will be Not Connected

open Garmin Connect Mobile App(GCM)>My Day> Touch blue coloured data wheel (upper right corner), data wheel will start to spin then stop, then after a few seconds the white 'progress' wheel to left of the data wheel will complete about 1/4 circle clockwise down from the green dot and then stop, and after 5-10 seconds, the data wheel starts spinning again and the white progress wheel completes the clockwise circle back to the green dot

On same page go to More>Garmin Devices>press Sync Now, and data wheel spins and stops

Check Bluetooth settings to ensure both Edge settings are Connected. If BT_Edge 1030 Bontrager not Connected, press to Connect

Return to GCM, then press back arrow at top left to return to 'More' page

open Safety & Tracking>LiveTrack>turn off Auto Start>turn on Auto Start>turn off Strava Beacon which takes you to the Strava App Beacon page

turn off Beacon>turn on Beacon

turn off Beacon for Garmin (if on), if already off, go to next step

turn on Beacon for Garmin, and a Quick Tip window pops up. Select "I Already Have"

Return to Garmin Connect App (Connect app should still be open, so press Connect link upper left corner of screen)

Start navigation timer on Garmin

You should get notification on your Garmin that Garmin LiveTrack is active as well as get notifications on your phone that Live Track and Strava Beacon are working.

When you end navigation, you'll get notification on your Garmin that LiveTrack ended

This worked for me every time I tried it today. I did not go for a ride today, but I did walk around the block once with my phone and Garmin, and bothLiveTrack and Strava Beacon 'followed' me around the block.

Lett me know if this works for you

if you don't have Strava Beacon, sorry but I didn't test for that scenario.

IMPORTANT: Do these steps relatively quickly. I found that delays between steps somehow disconnected the Bluetooth connections,or some other aspect of the connection to LiveTrack became disconnected, but when I proceeded step,by step without delay it worked well.

  • You should burn three candles in a circular pentagram with proper herbs too. This will ensure otherworldly forces will not intervene. Slight smile

I honestly, just gave up on this feature. It seems that Garmin has too. It is a shame on their part.

  • I have given up too!!   Wasted far too much time trying to work out which combination kick starts a live track.  It used to work most of the time, but more recently is just useless.  I just share my location on my iPhone now with my family - and guess what - it just works!!!

  • I thought I had it working too when I changed the GPS setting to only GPS and not Galileo. Worked for four rides but now live track works for about one mile and stops. I've given up trying and gone back to the RoadID app.

I'm going for a ride in a coupple of hours and will report if it's voodoo or fact Grinning  . I agree it's way too many steps to take (if in fact it will really work) when my Wahoo just works, plain and simple.

Good news and bad. Using the sequence I previously outlined, LiveTrack worked flawlessly for about 55 Km, then the signal was lost and was not reconnected for the remainder of the ride, a distance of about 16 Km. The location where the signal was lost was on a country road and its possible that the cell signal switched from LTE to 3G.  Would that be the cause of the dropped LiveTrack recording, or is this just part of a broken LiveTrack? I should have picked up a LTE signal within 5 Km from where the signal was lost.

  • Mine works just fine the past few weeks Bij manually turning it on in the Gcm app, just before I start riding. No flaws since then. And I live close to the Belgium France border so I skip different networks for my phone all the time.
