Quarq TyreWiz (v0.11) Sensors Not Connecting Reliably After v7.50 with ConnectIQ TyreWiz v1.05

Not sure if this is to do with v7.50 of the Edge 1030 firmware or v1.05 of the ConnectIQ TyreWiz app, but something bad happened within the past month.  If I stopped long enough and the TyreWiz sensors went into sleep mode, they would just drop out and never re-connect.  For the past six months, everything worked if you rebooted the Edge 1030 _after_ the sensors went to sleep and woke back up.  Now, when I start a ride, the TyreWiz sensors don't connect at all until I've ridden for about ten minutes and then reboot the Edge 1030.

It's also annoying that you MUST use two data fields for both sensors and they're using a weird font.  It would be much better to just add front and rear tire pressure settings as individual fields.  Isn't this an option with the ConnectIQ API?

Is Garmin going to add native support for these at some point?  Clearly, there's some sort of problem with ConnectIQ or Quarq's ConnectIQ app itself.  It has never worked as flawlessly as the Edge 1030 connecting to power meters, HRMs, etc.

  • Yeah, but did you update the TyreWiz app in May?  That's when everything stopped working for me regardless of 7.5 or 8.0 of the Edge 1030 firmware.

  • Also, before May, if the Edge 1030 went to sleep, the TyreWiz sensors wouldn't reconnect.  I emailed Quarq about this not long after the TyreWiz sensors were released and they never bothered responding or fixing the issue.  When Quarq finally did update the TyreWiz Connect IQ app in May, it arrived even more broken than the first version in that the sensors wouldn't even connect when the Edge is first powered on.

I'm AMAZED that Garmin hasn't added support for these yet.  Either the Connect IQ API itself is totally busted or the Quarq TyreWiz Connect IQ implementation against the API has severe bugs.  Also, Garmin has their own tire pressure sensors as well, but they never released for bicycles, only motorcycles.  Not sure why it's taken so long for Garmin to make an Ant+ profile for TPMS sensors the same way they have them for Speed, Cadence, and Power Meters.  But, here we are in 2019 with broken ConnectIQ apps and sensor drop outs.

  • The other strange thing is that TyreWiz sensors work 100% of the time with my Fenix 5X watch.  Maybe the ConnectIQ API implementation on the Edge 1030 itself busted?  I don't know.

  • With Edge 1030 firmware v7.85+ there was a bug migrated over from Edge 530/830 concerning all IQ-datafields which establish an own ANT+ connection.

These IQ-datafields work well after the first installation. Once the device was rebootet they don‘t work anymore.

Work-around: after an activity was stored swap the datafield to a dummy (distance) and then turn off completely. After turning on (boot) set the IQ anew. Now it will work again (for the next time until you turn off the device).

Garmin 1030-team is aware of this issue and it will be corrected in next firmware - hopefully.

Garmin team wrote: The 7.85+ software was a great code migration over to use the same stuff as 530/830. It probably fixed a bunch of small things but may have introduced a couple of things as well. At least now when we fix it on one it will fix it on all 3 (finally).

  • The same exact situation with the Humon Hex IQ datafield. The bug has been known for more than a month. Not exactly a top-shelf priority for them.

  • From Garmin:

We’ve got a fix in place for Connect-IQ ANT datafields.  We’re targeting the Edge 530/830/1030 Oct 8th release.  This was a quick fix and past the initial code freeze date for the October release.

  • Thanks! Hope it works!

  • I was seeing connection problems in 7.50 though.

  • Hi hoyhoy, Did you do anything different/unusual to have this work on the Fenix 5X. I've struggled with Tyrewiz on my Forerunner 945, adding it as a datafield.

Do you spin the wheels first to wake them up before starting the datafield or datafield first then spin the wheels, or whatever.. it just works?
