Trying Edge 1000 again after a long time - livetrack actually worked - why is 1030 so defective?

Last week I pulled out my old Edge 1000 and hooked it up to my phone and used it for a week instead of the 1030 (which is my second one as first was warrantied for the blue screen edge defect). Wow! I couldn't believe, how effectively and aggressively the 1000 was to connect to my phone. It connected immediately. Whether I powered the 1000 off or just put it to sleep, as soon as I powered on, it connected. It connected day after day. I never had to open GCM or think about GCM. If I rebooted my phone (S7) I would open GCM once to get the service running, but then never worried about it again. I got perfect Livetracks, ride after ride and all without ever thinking about GCM (latest version). Segments synced, rides uploaded all without me even thinking about things. But Livetrack worked. It worked when I would go out of network range and come back in. It worked if I walked away from bike and came back. It worked if I used my phone and did other things with it and left GCM minimized. I forgot what a perfect livetrack had looked like.

Other things I noticed:

1. Segments and things requiring internet loaded way faster than 1030

2. Weather CIQ apps loaded weather many seconds faster than 1030.

3. Oddly, even ANT+ connections seemed established faster. DI2 showed up 2-3 seconds faster than the 1030 does when I clicked the button to wake it up. Power meter (4iiii) showed the calibrate screen seconds faster than the 1030 when it woke up.

So what is the difference that the 1030 downgraded all this functionality? I've given up hope the 1030 can ever be fixed Disappointed

Used my 1030 again on a ride yesterday and back to the poor livetrack with the regular screen disconnects as shown below.

  • Maybe I'll keep my Edge 1000 as my head unit and track my rides on my fenix5 also to track the overall intensity since the Edge 1000 will not contribute to TrueUp.

  • You bring up the the point that the 1000 does not need GCM running to connect to the phone. I wonder why the 1030 needs GCM running in the background to establish a connection to the phone. When I first got the 1030, it would immediately connect to the iphone in seconds without GMC running. It connects quickly with GCM but I wonder what is the reason why it has changed.Live track worked for me the few times I tried it but I don't use it. I'll have to try it again to see if it is still working.

I can report exactly the same. My wife has my old 1000. She never actually taps on the GCM app icon to run the app, but her 1000 always connects to the phone when it's powered on, always starts Livetrack without any problem when she starts an activity, always uploads the activity without problem and without any manual intervention when it is terminated, and her livetrack always looks fine.

My 1030 requires the GCM app to be started before it will ever connect, frequently loses connection to the phone during an activity, produces garbage livetracks, and quite frequently the GCM app doesn't think that Livetrack has completed even though it knows that the activity has completed and has allowed me to manually perform a sync to upload the activity.

Both phones are running Android 9 with the same version of GCM installed. Here's an example of a recent livetrack off the 1030:

  • All this stuff happens to me as well. I have a iPhone Xs max. It's very frustrating. I never had this issue with the Edge 1000.

  • The 830 I finally got works like my 1000. Seems the 830 can't wait to connect to my phone regardless of whether I have opened GCM recently or not. Also there are new notifications in GCM that show the 830 has connected. I'm happy so far. Wish I never got a 1030.

"Wish I never got a 1030" same here, only prob was it running out of storage.

I have regular problems with detection of sensors, GCM, phone disconnects & corrupt fit files, none of which happened with 1000 unit.

    .

  • I used LiveTrack to day with no issue whatsoever.

A phone disconnect does not corrupt the FIT file, which is stored on the Edge and does not depend on the phone connection. If phone disconnected during the upload process and that caused an issue, you can always recover the FIT by connecting the Edge to  a computer and then upload it manually to GC. But I only had to do this once in years.
