Can the Edge 1030 show elevation ahead without a GPX file? eaning if I go out for a ride without navigating (just in ride recording mode) will I be able to see the elevation of the road ahead?

  • No.

It wouldn't make that much sense to do so since it has no way of knowing what road you are going to use.

If you were using "route to" (without a gpx/fit/tcx file), it could, technically, generate an elevation profile because the device has elevation data (in the DEM map). But they don't appear to do that.

  • Technically you can load routes from apps which doesn't require you loading a file manually.  I use the trailforks app and therefore don't need to load files to get elevations.

  • These work by downloading a file.

  • Yes, but it doesn’t require the user to physically download a file and load via a transfer. It is a simple experience and most people would not know about the file. Point being it is easy, doesn’t require much pre-planning and works quickly even when done from the trail.

Like you said, it can’t reasonably work without knowing where you are going...

  • The Edge cannot know what route you follow at the next intersection so it would be only guessing. However you can easily create a route with the Connect Mobile App and/or the Connect website. You transfer with your phone. Nothing to plug. It is very easy to do. Just need to plan your route.
