Turn guidance for courses still broken

My 1030 running the latest firmware is still not functional with regards to route guidance prompts when using the generic routable new map from this link http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/. The course loads and turn guidance is on however the turn prompts do not come up, so if you are riding with a data screen you get lost and miss junctions.

Does anyone else experience this?

  • Do you get the "Calculating %" ?

Do you see a list of turns when clicking the text at the top of the map?

Why are you using that map instead of the map that comes with the unit?

  • Yes since 7.4.  The course is shown on map but no guidance prompts.

  • Yes, it calculates correctly and the list shows up, however the turn prompts do not come up despite everything being correct within the settings.

I use this map because it's superior, not only is it newer, but more importantly the fine detail of POI's such as restrooms and trails is much more comprehensive and detailed, the separation between classes of roadway is also better.

It's simply a much nicer map that worked correctly up until the 7.x firmwares.

  • Openstreet does have more details. On my Edge and Montana. But your correct. All the functions do not work the same. No routing on the Edge. On my he Montana it routes but no speed limit signs. So it should be routable on the Edge.

  • It uses the map to generate the list. It shouldn't need the map at all to use the list.

I've seen a problem with the (Garmin map) where the unit doesn't begin to use the list. That problem seemed to tend to happen when the course was loaded further along (not at the start locations)

  • Turn guidance is the result of the unit calculating a second route that follows roads that the track appears to be using.

The second route is displayed as a light magenta line. You'll also get a list of turns that you can see when clicking an the text at the top of the map.

If you have these things, then routing is working. If you have these things but are not  getting the turn guidance, the problem is that the unit isn't using the routing.

The track is displayed as a magenta line with black borders. This line is thinner than the calculated route line

  • I use the official maps and am having thee same problem. I'm using routes I have used before. The routes load, but TBT is broken. No matter where I am on the route, even though the map displays correctly, it otherwise shows distance to destination as the full length of the route and distance to next is perpetually 12 feet or so. During the entire route TBT acts as if I haven't started the route.

Something in the software is stalling the start of TBT even though GPS is active and the maps changes as you ride.

  • That's the problem I saw and reported about a month ago. (I saw the same sort of problem on the Touring.)

It has nothing to do with maps. That is, once the secondary route with the turns has been calculated (which does need the map), the process of displaying the turns doesn't really need the map.

I think 's problem might be the same issue and have nothing to do with the map being used.

If route recalculation is enabled. the maps are used when the device determines you are off course.

Note that the map is only changed if the device is on the map screen (it saves power not to update the map on other screens). Turn guidance (the big white arrows) works on any screen.

The unit is designed to do multiple things at once (a primitive type of multi-tasking). It seems the "process turn guidance" task isn't being started.

  • Yes, I think your analysis may be correct.

I use the navigation functionality often as part of my cycling and training is simply enjoying new places and routes, I have to report this to Garmin and I suggest that anyone experiencing this also does the same.

This is critical functionality that has been rendered useless with the 7.x software.

  • This is exactly the problem I am seeing. Distance to next and distance remaining never change and I do not get any turn by turn directions. I have used the same routes that worked in the past. I have even tried riding to known save locations and riding back to start along the same route.
