Edge 1030 not updating weight, height data from Garmin Connect

Hi,

Just got my new 1030 (updated from 1000) and setting it all up etc. but have an issue.

The Weight, Height, Sex and Date of Birth is not updating from Garmin Connect, Have tried syncing it, tried syncing through Garmin Express etc. but nothing. Tried manually changing the fields but these will not sync across.

Any ideas?

  • Hello,

I have noticed a samekind of a problem with my 1030 lately. My firmware version is 7.30. I have tried to soft reset the device and also factory reset the device. No help with either of those. First I thought it was a Bluetooth issue as uploads stopped working all of a sudden, or they worked some times and some times not. Then, after experimentation with resets, I realized that it was not a bluetooth issue between phone and 1030. Now I have a theory that the actual problem is that my 1030 is incapable of syncing data to and from GC (BT or WLAN, no matter which one). Symptoms I have noticed are following. This happens when setting up the device after a hard reset. Hard reset usually fixes all these, but not this time (I have tried several times now):

    - Training uploads not working

    - Language set to Finnish. Language changes, but metrics remain as imperial, not metric as should be in Finland. My profile in GC is metric/finnish.

    - User data (height, weight, etc) remains in incorrect default values, not dowloaded from GC

    - Heart rate zones not dowloaded from GC. Remain as incorrect default values

    - Physio true-up not downloading training status nor the recovery time or FTP (no help when toggling it off / on and sync)

    - Training history not downloaded

-> Basically NOTHING WORKS when considering the device / GC interaction

Bluetooth has 2 separate connections with the device (iPhone X / 1030). They seem to work ok. Sometimes error in syncing the 1030 to phone, sometimes not. Very flaky behaviour. I have also synced and tried everything with Garmin Express in iMac, but same problems with that method. I have also configured WLAN to 1030, no help in syncing.

So I bet the device is a-ok, but GC backend is now somehow messed up. I have noticed all kinds of reports of problems with syncing 1030 in Facebook and here. I don't recall the exact starting time of these problems, but somewhere within the last 2 weeks or so. Maybe after the FW 7.30. One can't go back to previous FW, can one?

The situation is quite bad as the hard reset of the 1030 is not fixing it. I genuinely think, this requires Garmin's immediate response and actions (hopefully you are active in this forum and see this).

I have Fenix 5X and Edge 1030. Both have had issues during their journey (several issues actually), but nothing like this before.

I have tried all possible and half of the woodoo tricks (like putting phone in airplane mode when connecting 1030 to phone for the first time etc) and nothing helps. I'm a software and security professional by day job and not new to computers or other gadgets. I think I know what I'm doing with these devices, but still I have no idea how to proceed from here. I don't believe there is anything wrong with the hardware in either my iPhone X, iMac or Edge 1030. This must be a web backend / software problem. For some reason I haven't seen any notifications from Garmin about this. Maybe they don't know it yet or want to silently iron it out or have no channel to inform users about it. This new forum is not very informative (google searches points to wrong / old pages etc). Forum search...well. It is a forum search.

You might notice that I'm a "bit" frustrated with this issue. However I'm still looking forward on the solution.

  • My 1030 connects and syncs rides fine with Iphone 6. There is a Garmin Status webpage that shows if Garmin is having any issues on their end. Just google Garmin Status.

  • New information regarding my previous findings:

    - Activity upload seems to work. I just assumed it was not fixed by the reset as the other features weren't. Now that I just tested it with few seconds "activity", it uploaded fine. So my mistake there.

    - The problem that the originator of this thread reported still remains in my 1030 too. That being the user profile not loaded from GC to 1030. Metrics remain imperial, weight, height, age and all remains in incorrect default values. I even removed the GC from the phone and re-installed it and it did not help (I wonder why should it, but everybody always seems to suggest that :-))

    - I don't know if the previous finding correlates to this, but Physio True-Up says (in 1030) that it is disabled in the Garmin Connect. It is not, when looking into Garmin Connect. I have (once again) tried to disable it, sync it and then re-enable it and sync again. No help.

So my theory remains: something wrong in the back-end of the GC. For some reason I'm not able to turn the physio true-up on, no matter what I try. I guess this is related to the problem of not being able to load the user profile from GC either.

A side note: With my Fenix 5X everything works as normal.

Regarding the Garmin Status pages: Thank's for the info. All the systems seems to be "go" there. I bet it is just an "up-time" watch. System can be up, but there is a bug in the code. That's a possibility, but not a fact.

I still suspect I'm doing something wrong or missing something here. Usually (almost always) it is user error. But as said. I have tried to analytically de-bug this, however I'm not working in the Garmin quality assurance, so I'm not spending that much time and effort, so consider this as user ramblings. Not exact science. I'm just trying to figure out what a heck has happened to my 1030. This is unnecessarily complex now. No good.

  • Just for the record: I contacted Garmin Fitness via Facebook and explained the situation there. Looking forward on some guidance from there.

  • Update:

I had a long discussion with Garmin support in Finland.  We debugged the profile transfer problem with them by updating the profile (height and weight) manually in GC Web and then syncing the data via cable to Edge. Data was not transferring.

After debug and long discussion / bug hunting they asked me to send all the contents (all files zipped, without maps) from my Edge to them. Also a screenshot from the user profile data from the Edge and from the GC Web (to see that they differ).

They also told me that metrics (imperial or metric) is something that does NOT transfer automatically from GC, as I was complaining about that. I don't recall changing those, but one does that so seldomly (when taking new Garmin in use) that I might remember it wrong. So that "myth" got busted. You can have imperial settings on the head unit and metric in the GC..I guess that is the point why. I think it is silly, but it is just me. :-)

  • Wow. Thanks for replying.

So annoyed as things are all going pear shaped at the moment with syncing stuff from all over.

Why can't there be one certification for everything.

Hopefully they will get it all sorted.

Same problem for me after I sent in my Garmin 1030 for screen issues and got a refurbished back last week. Now nothing updates between Garmin connect and the unit.
