How to have a back up course file if file is lost.

I started a 300k ride and my 1030 said no courses found. I then had to ride with paper. Is there a way to have the ability to have the same course on a back file on the 1030. I tried changing the name but it will not take the second course not sure why.

What is the best way to have a back up file of a course in case the file gets lost at the event?

  • The course name is contained inside the file so changing the file name will not result in a new course.

What format is the course file in, you maybe able to change the name in the file before loading it to the Edge.

  • I can use either a gpx or tcx . I mostly download from ridewithgps. How you change the name? If i loose the file again can i put the same file on a sd card in the new file and have the gpx file on it . When i put the card in will give me the new course from  a new sd card?

  • If you use a text editor you should see the name in the file near top, in name tags

Using something like FirstObject might make easier to edit

    Here is an example

  • I used notepad and it does not look like that but i found the line <name> . Is this all i need to change?

  • And by the way thank you for your time

There are multiple ways of doing this. How are you downloading from ride with GPS?

If you are using a computer you may be able to use Garmin mapsource or Garmin Basecamp to simply change the name of the course. That is how I would do it. Same file renamed a few different ways.

The question I would ask is why the file you had did not show up.

  • Changing the name value between the tags is all you need to change. You might also want to change the file name when you save it.

The Edge uses the <name> value to name a course unless that is missing from the file, then it uses the file name.

  • I agree that is a concern. I have never seen a course file disappear. Does the file system on the Edge look corrupt?

  • I have seen things dissappear in the past. From what I have seen if you've loaded something onto the edge say a course from GCM over BT & your edge experiences a crash/reboot situation before you've done a power cycle ( ie power off not sleep) when the Edge has rebooted the course may no longer be there.

If this is done from a USB connection it's usually OK as the Edge reboots following the disconnection of the device and puts the course into the courses folder from newfiles.

I don't know whether the edge doesn't update some sort of course inventory if there's a crash & on reboot doesn't know the course has been added

  • The file from the promoters of the ride are loaded into RidewithGPS so i have use this service. It has the ability to download the following formats:

    FIT Course (.fit)

    TCX Course (.tcx)

    GPX Track (.gpx)

    GPX Route (.gpx)

    Cuesheet CSV (.csv)

    Google Earth (.kml)

    Map/Profile Images

My file was lost on a reboot of the garmin. I hit ride course and its was a big file 187 mile and it must have rebooted on start up then the file was gone. I was just trying to figure out a back up plan for this week ends 250 / 400k ride.
