Bluetooth issues with iOS 11

We are continuing to work with Apple regarding Bluetooth connection issues with our devices. We have released Garmin Connect Mobile version 4.1.5 that includes improvements for iOS connectivity. Please continue to post any feedback in this thread.

I'm on 11.2.5. Any updates on this problem? I just bought the 1030 after I got the 'white screen of death' on my Edge 1000. I have a lot of products from Garmin and I'm getting frustrated with the poor development processes. This really needs to get resolved or I'll need to return my 1030 and move on over to Wahoo.
  • I'm on 3.80 and iOS 11.2.5

I'm afraid that you'll have to work real hard to solve the issues on your GCM app. This app is killing my iPhone's battery life, and of course, It closes randomly causing a bluetooth disconnection.

It is frustrating have to stop riding, bring out the phone, open GCM app again and keep riding again.

6 months has been passed since you release this "Top of the range" product and the situation is still like this.

You´re killing it with this one.
  • On my Fenix 3 it takes like 20 minutes before it "magically" connects now (it has been working flawless for more than two years).
On my Edge 1000 it works very good now, it connects fine, live track works, it uploads activities fine.
I guess it is device dependent, ie Garmin has to fix it on the Edge 1030 like they has fixed it on the Edge 1000.

My Iphone 7 with latest OS will not connect automatically to my 1030. It would not auto upload even with GC open or Wifi enabled. Only a cable connection on my PC would allow a upload. A recent GC update in the last few days hasn't fixed the issue fully either but has an improvement slightly. My phone does not automatically link when the 1030 is turned on, it does if i open GC but now it will upload my new ride via Bluetooth if i hit the sync button a few times in the GC screen which it wouldn't do last GC version!

    Are you using iOS 11.2.6?

LiveTrack needs GCM to be started (http://www8.garmin.com/livetrack/). The bluetooth icon that you can see on your watch / GPS just shows the fact that it's connected via BT, but that doesn't really mean that GCM is also started.

For me (using Strava Beacon, which I guess is built on LiveTrack), it works but it's not streaming live. My wife reports that each time she checks my location has jumped from the previous spot but then appears not to be moving. So my guess is the 1030 to Phone connection is intermittent but it could really be anywhere between 1030 - iPhone - Garmin - Strava. Works fine using my Edge 800

Will be now i have the option. Was 11.2.5. Lets see what happens afterwards! Thanks for the heads up.
  • Reading through this discussion is reassuring for me, at least I'm not the only one who's totally frustrated with the edge 1030. I bought it because I ride long events, 400, 600, 1000 kilometers. The potential 20 hour battery life is a real life saver then. Loading a ride via Bluetooth is virtually impossible. I've often had to 'forget the device' on my iPhone and start all over again. It takes 20 to 30 minutes and about 40% of my iPhone battery. Finally I've given up. I'm back to using my edge 520 and plan on selling my edge 1030. Why is it that my old edge 1000s (I have two of them), load any activity almost instantly ? For now, I'm not recommending the edge 1030 to anyone.

Got this response today from garmin in an email and was told software engineers continue to work on it

“Garmin is aware of an issue where devices are disconnecting from the Connect Mobile on iOS mobile devices running iOS 11.

    Symptoms include:
    • Device disconnecting from the app and not able to reconnect
    • Data not syncing to Garmin Connect mobile app
    • Weather information not displaying on compatible Garmin devices

Please ensure the following if you encounter any of the above symptoms:
    • Update the Garmin Connect Mobile app from the App Store
    • Ensure that the iOS version on your mobile device is up to date

If you continue to experience any of the above symptoms you can temporarily work around the issue by simply power cycling your mobile device.

Please see related content below to troubleshoot any other Bluetooth issues with Garmin Connect Mobile. “

One of the bug fixes listed in the 11.2.6 release notes

"Fixes an issue where some third party apps could fail to connect to external accessories"

Fingers crossed that's Garmin devices via BTLE...
