Edge1030 only connect if GCM is open, but Vivoactive3 stays connected round the clock

Hi,

my Vivoactive3 stays connected the whole day, but the Edge1030 will not connect until I open GCM.

How can this be?

Regards,
Ralf
  • For the edge to work you need gcm to be loaded. It can be in the background, no need to be the active app. But must be loaded. That is on iOS. Make sure to enable background operation for this app, there are settings for that in iOS.

I have exact the same problem with a Samsung S9+
  • Tried troubleshooting over a dozen times, but nothing helped me.

I think there is a massive problem with Android Pie.

??????I love the Edge 1030, but the connectivity to mobiles is poor.
  • I have same issue with 1030 and galaxy s9. I just assumed Garmin set it up this way and never understood why.
  • There is nothing to understand. This is a ridiculous change from the 1000 to the 1030, which points downwards.
  • Sadly this is a massive issue with 1030. It has not been fixed till date and I doubt it ever will. Unfortunately Edge 1030 has had massive issues with it's BT module. I don't know if that is the root cause, but could be since its still a problem 1,5 year after launch...
  • I am curious as to why folks see this as a huge issue. I have always kept GC running on my Samsung S7e while I am using my 1030. No problems with connectivity. This is my first Garmin bike computer so for me this was normal and thus perfectly acceptable. I would think that for things like Livetrack you would need GC to be running (at least in the background) to relay the data from the 1030 to a server.

The problem is that every time I start an activity, I have to unlock the phone and open garmin connect manually to start livetrack and connectivity. With the Garmin 1000 with just starting activity he did it all. Do you understand the difference? automatic vs manual. It involves stopping, taking out a bag mobile, unlocking with gloves ... tedious

    You nailed it! Thank you.
  • The vivoactive 3 or the Edge 1030 will not transfer data to Garmin Connect without the Garmin Connect application being open or open in the background.
