Overriding E-Tube Gearing Settings

The Shiman0 2.0 protocol supports the Di2 system sending across the size of the front rings and rear cassette. This is configured using the e-tube app either on a phone or on a Windows machine.

You can configure the 1030 to either accept the values sent by the Di2 system or ignore them and manually set the sizes using the Edge. You need to be in communication with the Di2 system to see the UI option.

Not wanting to threadjack the other Di2 discussion, but what are the specific chainring/cog options available to manually configure a chainset in the Edge Di2 setup? Is this documented anywhere?

The options in the E-Tube app are terrible (because Shimano has no clue how people actually setup their bikes), for example, a 50/34 crank has to be configured as a 53/39 in E-Tube in order to trick the rear derailleur to be able to shift into the small chainring/cog, to uncomplicate removing/replacing a rear wheel.

Can this be overridden in the Edge 1030 setup to properly record “nonstandard”/non-Shimano gearing into the FIT file? Are the Edge options restricted to only cranks and cassettes that Shimano sells?
  • If you switch of the automatic option off you can then pick from preset combinations or you can select custom and create your own.
  • Would be interesting to see if it retains the settings aweatherall. Back in 2017 I posted the following relating to the Edge 1000 I had at the time

"I have to say 14.30 Firmware on Edge 1000 did resolve Di2 settings. Appreciate this forum for seeing the same bug I was. Unfortunately it introduces a new issue, namely we are now dependent on Shimano preset gears and chainrings and no longer have freedom to set whatever we are actually running. Case in point, I run SRAM 11-36 11sp cassette. Shimano doesn't have this as an option in Di2, so I set the closest thing, 11-32. So I still have to reset my cassette settings on Garmin every single ride if I want to see my true gearing as apparently the Di2 will always overwrite whatever custom setting I put in when starting up the device and connecting. :( How is this better?"

At the time someone asked that I should contact Shimano and I did and Shimano said their DI2 will always send and overwrite the Garmin options with only the sizes that they create for their derailleurs. So I had an older RD and it would only allow 11-32 in the app (though I always run 11-36), and then upgraded to newer Ultegra RD and it now has 11-34 because Shimano have made that, but it won't allow the 11-36. Think I've tried manually setting the sizes on 1030, and found it reverted back to Shimano settings after the next device restart, but can't remember for sure.
