Issue with Shimano Di2

Any ideas?

I have and Edge 1030 running firmware V7.00 (tried 7.2 but that caused the touchscreen to stop responding while connected to an external USB power source so reverted)
I've been running shimano's Di2 with both a front and rear derailleur and displaying my gearing on the Edge. This worked great both before update and reverting the the firmware to 7.00
I took off the front derailleur when I installed a Bafang BBSHD and now I'm having an issue where the Garmin isn't showing the correct rear derailleur gear. Eventually it will update but not immediately like before or consistently.
I've tried deleting the D-fly and reinstalling it but the problem hasn't gone away. I also thought it might be having an RF interference so moved the D-fly to withing an inch of the Garmin no change. Also both the speed and separate cadence sensor both responding and displaying correctly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Under the Di2 gear options on the Edge are you using automatic or manual gear selection? Because you are missing the FD this might be messing things up as that is not support until you get to build 7.30. Try manually selecting the rear cassette size or upgrading to build 7.30.
  • If I recall a recent update maybe 7.20 was specifically addressing issues with single ring di2.

    aweatherall,
What do you mean by automatic gear selection on the Edge? If you're referring to cassette / crank tooth setting than I've tried changing those with no change in behavior.
If you're referring to Shimano's Synchro Shift than I've never used it. I the older internal battery/D-fly that doesn't support Synchro shifting.

As for upgrading the firmware. I tried 7.2 but it disabled the touch screen when plugged into my USB battery so I went back to 7.0 The Di2 display was working correctly after this so can't blame it on that. The odd behavior didn't happen until after I removed the from derailleur. Don't know if this would make a difference but I am running the Ultegra rear derailleur not the XT/XTR.

Can anyone confirm that the touchscreen is still usable while plugged into an external battery while on 7.3?

    Thanks
    Angelica
  • Just did a test with v7.3:
touchscreen stays fully operable when the device is plugged to an external battery.
  • The Shiman0 2.0 protocol supports the Di2 system sending across the size of the front rings and rear cassette. This is configured using the e-tube app either on a phone or on a Windows machine.

You can configure the 1030 to either accept the values sent by the Di2 system or ignore them and manually set the sizes using the Edge. You need to be in communication with the Di2 system to see the UI option.

As there is currently no FD I'm not sure how the Di2 system is handling it as it does not know what ring you are on at the front. It may just default to index position 1.

I've updated to 7.3 and the touchscreen still works when plugged in. HURRAY!
I've deleted and re-added the Di2 sensor but will have to wait until tonight for my commute home to see if it updates consistently.
Just checking it without riding it still has about a 3 second delay but that is better than the two minute or more delays I was getting before.

I'll post an update tomorrow with my results. Keeping fingers crossed
Thanks to everyone for the help.

Just wanted to give everyone an update. Still have the problem with the Garmin not updating the Di2 display so V7.3 did not fix the problem.
When I have time I'll plug the front derailleur back in, once I can find the stupid cable that is, and see if that fixes the problem.

Will update when I've had time to do that.
  • Also make sure your Shimano Di2 firmware is updated using the eTube app. The D-fly has it's own firmware and Shimano release updates now and then. I know my bike received a few FW updates recently. Cheers.

I already check the Di-2 firmware. I actually have both programmers for the Di2 because the "consumer" unit has hosed the firmware updates more than once and I needed the other unit to fix it.

If I can find the stupid Di2 cable I'm going to try just plugging in the front derailleur and see if that fixes the problem. Other option is I have a new battery and bluetooth B-fly on another trike that I might swap and see if that fixes it. When I get the time to work on it that is.

Finally found the missing Di2 cable and just wanted to post an update to anyone else having this problem.

Plugged the front derailleur back in. I don't have either a shifter or syncro shift enable. So there is no way to use the front derailleur at all.
Now the Garmin updates the Di2 gear immediately like it used to. So the front derailleur has to be plugged in for the stupid Garmin to update the display.

Just for anyone else considering running a 1X system.
