Fenix5+ or Edge 1030

Hi,

Actually I have got a Vivoactive 3, cadence sensor, premium chest strap and radar 511. Unfortunately on my va3, the battery is over after a gps+galileo cycling tour of 5-6 hours and the altimeter is quite bad.

I am thinking about buying a Fenix 5+ instead of my VA3 or Edge 1030 in addition to my VA3 (I also do hiking, running, swimming etc.). I prefer the fenix, because as far as I saw from datasheet, there is no feature that the Edge has got what the Fenix hasnt (except accident notification and smaller display).

So now my question to you: Is there any disadvantage of fenix compared with edge 1030 (except those 2 I wrote)? Is the altimeter/gps senor of edge maybe better?

Thanks!
  • I have a Fenix 5x and an Edge 1030. I enjoy the larger screen on the Edge when I am on the bike and I dont need to keep looking at my wrist to get data... sure, I could mount the watch on the bars but I dont want to.
When I am doing the sprint triathlons I used the remote screen feature so I could use my F5x to record everything and still have a large screen while cycling.
  • Ok, and did you mention some differences in km and height meters when recording by both fenix and edge? Or is the data the same?

I don't get the relevance of the extended display during triathlon as your are limited of 4 + 2 fixed fields. I prefer to have my fileds templates during ride (and possibility of connect iq fields!) while fenix 5 records the full triathlon.
The only advantage of extended display is the total elapsed time but it's not so important and can be seen on watch.
  • Personally, I just get in from the swim, turn on the Edge and spin my Vector 3 pedals to wake them up. The edge will connect to my fenix as well as my Vector 3. On the bike portion I only look at speed, distance, cadence, and power. I could rotate the watch in such a way that I could see it easily while ridding but I simply dont care to.
It is just a personal preference. Any other fields I may want/need I can just select the appropriate page on the watch and glance at it when I need to. I prefer the larger display while on the bike so the remote screen works for me.
  • I prefer the large display too but keep my fenix 5 to record all the triathlon and leave the edge independant and so have all my usual fields for ride FEnix is used to record all alctivity and show data for swim and run but for the ride part, i look at the edge ..
  • Ok, thank you. And when you now compare the cycle part of a triathlon between fenix and edge: Are there any significant differences in kilometers and height meters in the activities? Which sensor is more accurate, fenix or edge?

And how long does the fenix 5+ last with cycling? Because I want to use gps+galileo, radar, chest hrm and cadence sensor, I thought ~15 hours?
  • Same distance as same speed sensor. Only minor variations in heigth difference. I think baraometer of edge is a little better thant fenix 5 but is pretty close.
  • To be honest, I have never bothered to compare. If I am using my fenix to record and edge as remote display the fenix records everything. If I am just cycling I only use the edge. If I decided to use the edge like Cedricg_38 I would just discard what the edge was telling me when I was done.
  • Indeed activity registered by edge is discarded at the end
