Straight Line Course?

Hi. 1030 on 7.20.

I went to Course Creator, picked a bunch of spots on the map, and, after various "Route Calculation Error" "Maps do not have routable roads in this area", I set it to "Straight Line" routing, "Lock on Road" off, but hitting "View Map", it *still* tells me "Route Calculation Error" "Additional maps are required for motorized vehicle navigation."

What?

So, like, forget all the fancy routing, you're telling me this thing won't even let me *store* a bunch of points with straight lines between them so I can remember where I need to go?

Utterly useless in the most basic sense. Such Fail.
  • You'll have to select a different routing mode in the activity profile.

    Please read what I wrote...

I set it to "Straight Line" routing

  • I'm really sorry i completely missed that. I wonder if garmin has clobbered straight line routing on their maps as well as the motorised forms
  • "lock on road" just changes how things are displayed (it doesn't affect routing). It makes the cursor stick (follow) a nearby road.

If it can't generate motorized routes, and can't generate straight line routes, what can it do?

Does the Course Creator work at all?

Cuz I sure can't get it to do anything.

I was trying to enter a specific low traffic route through the city into my bike computer that I could follow out on the street, and I feel that's pretty basic functionality. I wasn't even asking it to do any real routing, and was willing to manually enter a point at each turn myself, and yet still no.

Straight line routing doesn't use maps. It's typically used in situations where a map can't be used.

Unhappily, you are correct. This issue is around since two years ago when I “downgraded” from my good old edge 800 (which was able to follow off road courses without any problem) to the then new edge 820. I am tired of reporting this issue in these forum since two years ago. So far as I am able to understand from reading these forums, the same problem happens on edge 820/520plus/1030, since the navigation software is mostly the same. This morning, I got again the same problem: with “turn guidance off”, “route recalculation off” “routing mode straight line” I got a “no routable maps” error, followed by a annoying and blocking “do you want to make a direct route” instead? This jeopardized my first segment, since I am not able to read these useless and blocking messages without glasses and I had to stop to get the unit working again,

Yes, you are right: this 400 usd unit is completely useless to follow a course off road on MTB or where maps do not have the required detail. Plus, when you go off course (20 or 30 meters to the left or right) it insists that you should go back 200 or 300m to the point where you missed the course, and it is not able to tell you that your projected path is 20 meters at your side... something that the old generation units (Edge 800/810/Touring) where able to do without any problem. Unhappily, it seems that 95% of the users around just want TBT and do not even know how to follow a course, therefore this issue is completely ignored by Garmin.
