Installation Instructions
  • Connect your Edge 1030 device to your computer using the micro-USB cable.
  • Download and unzip Edge1030_707Beta.zip and place the GUPDATE.gcd file in the \Garmin folder of your device's internal storage drive.
  • Disconnect your device from the computer, approve the update on the Edge, and wait for the update to finish.
  • If you would like to revert to the last public release software, follow the above steps but place the GUPDATE-700.GCD file in the \Garmin folder. Rename the file to GUPDATE.GCD before disconnecting your device.
NOTE: If you revert to an older version of software, all of your settings will be reset to defaults.
  • Today on my ride with the new beta I had some navigation issues

The Activity Profile I was using has ‘Automobile Driving’ as the Navigation Routing Mode.

I tried to navigate from my current position to a place some 15Km away. However I got the message

“Route Calculation Error, Additional maps are required for motorized vehicle navigation”

I’ve used this feature and Routing Mode numerous times without issue in the past. The same message also appears if Motorcycle Driving is also selected as the Routing Mode.

I have the following default, standard Garmin maps installed and all are enabled

    INTL Standard Basemap NR
    Garmin DEM Map EU 2017.20
    Garmin Geocode Map EU 2018.20
Garmin Cycle Map EU North East 2018.20
Garmin Cycle Map EU South West 2018.20

Is anyone else able to confirm this and help me resolve?
  • Have you used this navigation option them since going to the 2018.20 maps? Motorized vehicle navigation is not supported in the latest release of the cycling maps, hence the message.
  • It's possible that I haven't as I tend only to use it on holiday.

Really though there's now two routing modes on the Edge that cannot be used as the maps supplied as standard by the vendor don't support them.... Brilliant Work Garmin!!

I'd use the Road Cycling mode if it actually worked properly. Regardless of the avoidance settings. It still takes the most pointless routes to get from A-B.
It would be great if the Edge had a Most Direct Route option for A-B navigation like you have for Back to Start.

I am able to use my 1030 in my car with maps (Generic routable) download from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
I have created an automobile Profile and I can stay on highways.

I think that is the only way forward Thank you. Very disappointed that Garmin have removed support for those routing modes
  • 7.07 has killed my installed apps access to internet through phone - Acuweather says phone not connected (although it is) and wind field says no iPhone. other connected functions working ok.
  • Nothing you should be desappointed of. As far as I know this has never been advertised as a feature and the Edge is sold as a cycling computer. You should not expect to seemlessly use it in other applications. Good for you if you cans but nobody’s fault if you can’t.

I use it exclusively as a cycling computer my friend, but because the Road Cycling routing mode is inadequate in it's route choice when navigating a-b often taking ridiculous routes I choose to use Automobile Driving mode as it allows me to use roads the Road Cycling mode omits by default. ie What the maps define as Interstate Highways in the US may just be a perfectly usuable main road in the EU. Trying to navigate a-b across a country border in the EU can give crazy results.

I could understand if I was asking for these modes to be added but they are already there just not usable with the standard maps...What next are they going to remove support for pedestrian or straight line routing modes neither of those are cycling related... maybe they have I haven't tried them!
  • The update to 7.07 kills Strava Routes, Strava Segments. I also can not edit Widgets or enter the Datafield
  • The update for people using Di2 with no front mech is genuinely useful and why I tried the beta. As someone running Alfine Di2 I can now see gear ratios (after calculating a virtual cassette for the rear). It's not perfect (for some reason the GPS 'sees' a 4 ring front permanently on 4 - but entering the front ring on that is trivial.

Sadly had to revert back due to problems with apps and data fields unable to access net through phone.

Hope this update for Di2 comes to the 820 too, my everyday unit.
