Disable recalculation completely

Is it possible to completely disable recalculation when riding a course file on the Edge 1030?

For years I have been using a program (Garminator) I wrote myself to create TCX course files. On the Edge 1030 I drop them in the NewFiles folder and after switching on the device it converts them to fit files in the Courses folder.
This program takes into account the NASA Aster GDEM Digital Elevation Map to determine the altitude at each point of the track. It also uses the yr.no website to determine the expected wind speed and direction at each point (in time and space) of the track. I input my own weight and that of my bike and gear combined and the average watts I push. Also the descent style can be adjusted using a slider from Turkey to Falcon. Like this I get a very accurate ETA for my course. On older Edge devices the ETA was based on the virtual training partner of the course file. Comes in handy when I want to catch a train or ferry.

Unfortunately the Edge 1030 is always recalculating, (especially when switching to a different course mid ride), draining the battery and messing with my (almost) perfect ETA.
Please make it possible in a firmware upgrade to get rid of the auto recalculating and get back my course file based ETA.
  • There was an issue with Activity Profiles on the Edge 1000, which I did loads of testing for Garmin support only for them to do sod all about it. So wouldn't be surprised if it made it's way into the Edge Explore.

Before I go into any detail can you confirm if you are using anything other than the Road Cycling Routing Mode in the Activity Profile where you are seeing the problem?

    1. I already experienced this issue with all activity profile routing options: road/mtb/walking/straight line. Even with straight line it attempts to find some road or trail alternative.

    2. While Garmin puts this option under “activity profile”, which should be  unchanged whenever you select it, I discovered that whenever you load a new course this option is rewritten, and you have to go deep in the menus Activity profile/profile/navigation/routing mode to reselect it. It does not even respects what you have as “default routing option”. No sense at all. Can’t they just put this working the same (and correct) way it was was working 8 years ago on the edge 800/810/touring units?

  • Road cycling, but why should that matter? The behavior (I.e. Turning off recalculation) has no effect under any activity as far as I can tell.

  • When I had my Edge 1000 there was an issue where regardless of the Routing Mode you were using it would only use the Recalculation setting from the Road Cycling Routing Mode.

So if you wanted to keep using the selected Routing Mode & have Recalculation Off you had to switch to the Road Cycling Routing Mode in your Activity Profile, ensure Recalculation was off for that mode & switch back to your chosen Routing Mode.

As you are using the Road Cycling mode & you have set Recalculation off then that issue is not your problem.

There is mention of a beta update for the Edge 1000 in this forum that is supposed to address some Recalculation issues, maybe there's a beta available for the Explore too
