Cannot Connect to Computer

Hello all,

So since I've had the 1030, about a week, the only way I have been able to get it to connect to my computer is by holding in the lap button and then connecting the usb cable. Today it will not connect even by doing this. First off I thought you should just be able to plug the unit into usb when its off and it will mount. Mine has never done this, it just starts charging.

I am using a MacBook Pro running Version 10.13.6. Trying various cables does not make any difference.

Anyone been able to find a solution?

Thanks for the help.
John
  • No.  My computer will not recognize my garmin even though it says it is charging.  Also i have an extremely hard time getting it to hook up to my phone.  Something is terribly wrong with the 1030.  I do not recommend it.   Garmin express is terrible as well.

  • Don't generalize, I have a mac and have no issues connecting my 1030. A few things to check:

    1) do you use the cable that came with the Edge ? Try it first and then maybe some other cables. Not all USB cables are created equal and issues are not rare.

    2) in the system setup of the Edge there is an option that need to be set for it to start in "Mass Storage mode" when connected, make sure it is set correctly. by default it is but maybe things were changed.

    3) Make sure you Mac will auto-mount connected drives. Do a test with a USB key for example. If it does not there is something with you Mac setup and not the Edge. When the Edge is connected it should reboot in mass storage mode and a GARMIN drive should appear on the Mac. Look for it in the Finder

    4) Make sure you don't have some security software on the Mac that will prevent a drive to mount. That is an extension of point 3). As shipped Mac's will mount USB drives but some 3rd party software can change that behaviour. Also is your Mac OS updated  with a current version ?

    5) connection to the phone is a totally different technology, BlueTooth wireless, and issues with that are something else to investigate. iPhones usually work just fine if paired properly following Garmin's process on their mobile app. Android is as usual a big can of warm since there is so many HW/SW combo out there.

  • 2) in the system setup of the Edge there is an option that need to be set for it to start in "Mass Storage mode" when connected, make sure it is set correctly. by default it is but maybe things were changed.

Please can you be more specific - where is that option, how can I reach it on my device?

  • My mistake. This option is under Settings/System on my Fenix3 watch, but I do not see it on the Edge 1030. So that device must default to Mass Storage then. The way I do this is usually to shutdown the Edge (not sleep, shut down). Then I connect to my Mac. The connection turn on the Edge and while booting goes to mass storage mode. Make sure you try another cable while at it.

  • In fact there is a „force to mass storage mode“ for Edge 1000, 1030 (and maybe others):
    turn off your device completely
press and keep holding the lap button (left bottom)
connect the device to your computer - keep on pressing lap button until the computer regognizes the device

And - like Martin said - try other cables.

So this is definitely a MAc platform issue. My old MacBook pro from 2010 is fine and connects no problem with my 1030. My new MacBook Pro from 2018 does not at all!

  • I was having the same problem but then I used the small USB > USB C adapter that came with my Pixel 4 to plug it straight into my laptop. Works like a charm now. This is the style I used > https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/qNwAAOSwkvZdjgPd/s-l400.jpg
